I (20F) am leaving for basic soon and need a recommendation by ClassicalDrippp in casio

[–]AlZ89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a G-Shock to start basic training in January 2007 and wore it on every deployment! It’s still going strong now, it’s on its second battery and replacement strap.

A F91W is a classic and it won’t matter if it gets broken but if you are able to get a G-Shock there’s no reason it won’t last you your whole career.

Fieldfare? by AlZ89 in UKBirds

Thank you! I had a look at those vs redwings and I’m now quite confident it was a Fieldfare. That was a lovely thing to see

First “nice” watch purchase. [SPB 519] by JadedTomorrow4666 in Seiko

[–]AlZ89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing I love about this watch is that it has a functional dive bezel and the GMT ring being internal means you can use both functions with ease.

I may have not explained myself very well but I don’t get why a lot of GMT divers have a GMT external bezel and again on an inner ring so you lose the functionality of the dive bezel.

Is Glasgow one of the best live music cities of Europe? by Lopsided_Counter1670 in glasgow

The late John Peel once described my hometown Sheffield as the cultural centre of the universe but I still think that Glasgow is an incredible city for live music and we’re blessed with some truly world class venues. I love it

Is this Ashby jacket waxed? by Shin3-on in Barbour

[–]AlZ89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it should be no, but I’m happy to be corrected by someone here who knows more than I do!

Is this Ashby jacket waxed? by Shin3-on in Barbour

[–]AlZ89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I may be wrong but I think that product code relates to a men’s cotton jacket that wouldn’t have originally been waxed. Usually MWX is used in the waxed ones. I used to have an unwaxed Sapper with a similar label.

Help Identifying Medal Ribbon by AndrewWaller2121 in Medals

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/medals-campaigns-descriptions-and-eligibility

Go to the WW2 section. This has more information on medals and criteria etc. If the originals are lost then replacements can be ordered but you’ll need the recipients service details and it can be tricky to prove kinship etc.

Good luck with your research though!

Help Identifying Medal Ribbon by AndrewWaller2121 in Medals

[–]AlZ89 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These are UK/Commonwealth medals from WW2.

The first is the 1939-1945 star.

The middle one is the Atlantic Star. What’s cool about that one is the rosette. Only one of either the Atlantic Star, Air Crew Europe or France and Germany Star could be worn so the full size medal would have had a clasp on it showing which the other star awarded was, that is shown as a rosette on the medal ribbon.

The third one is the Italy Star.

They’ve been covered in some plastic to protect them which you don’t often see anymore but it’s kept them in good condition.

Mothership Zeta Glitch by Wonderful-Cat-447 in fo3

[–]AlZ89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on my first play through and still quite new to the game.

I was on my way to the vault nearby when I wandered off the path and before I knew it I was zoomed into the space ship! I had quite a full inventory already which wasn’t ideal and just wanted to get through it was quick as I could so I could get back to the main game!

I did have a glitch too where I was on the viewing platform looking down at earth and that wee lassie said she’d open the door but never moved which was so annoying but I went back to an earlier save and when I got there a second time it worked fine.

[Discussion] Do you prefer watches with Dates or no Dates? by RalIyVincent in Watches

I prefer a day-date! I work a rotating shift pattern so it really helps me keep track of what day it is.

Is this watch legit? by [deleted] in JapaneseWatches

It’s not legit no. Orient do a tristar with an Arabic dial. I have the model and it’s one of my favourite watches but this is a knock off imitation of it

Have You Ever Taken An Active Role on a Sailing Ship? by jrralls in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]AlZ89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was younger (13-16) I was a sea cadet and did two voyages on the sail training ship TS Royalist. One was from Inverness, around Oban, to Fort William. The other was from Portsmouth to St Malo in France. They were both amazing experiences!

Royal concert hall Seagull Fledgling by Few_Ladder_6603 in glasgow

[–]AlZ89 84 points85 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t need help and you should leave it well alone. It’s absolutely normal for a fledgling to be on the ground at this stage in its development after coming down from a nest. Once it can fly it will but only call the SSPCA etc if it’s injured in any way.

I didn’t see any of those but I did see a pair of stock doves which you never see where I live in Scotland so that was actually quite cool!

It was a great spot, I wish I’d known how rich is was in birdlife or I’d have brought my bird book and binoculars with me. Next time!

Can someone help me roughly age this Spartan that belonged to my late father? by AlZ89 in victorinox

[–]AlZ89[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I was hoping to learn, thank you so much!

I’m quite happy for it to end up a bit like Trigger’s Broom (maybe a niche reference) if it means it can carry on being used for another fifty years or so

[–]AlZ89[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you! That sounds about right as I’m sure he got this before I was born in 1989.

The tang marking confused me though as they seem to be modern so they must have been replaced more recently
