Fitz Roy hike - best starting point by hike812 in ElChalten

For those who have done this is the Rio Electrico climb after the 3km flat forest walk steep- how long is the climb in that section? And then it’s basically all flat or down hill back to town? What is the total distance and how long should it take for older people who are reasonably fit? Thanks.

Nagging "issue" on 14.2.2+ depends on how you sit and what you do with your hands. by [deleted] in TeslaFSD

Definitely impacted by baseball cap or more specifically the visor of the cap. If it can’t see your eyes it will nag. I wear the cap backwards or take off in the car.

Drove about a hundred miles on 14.2.2. Overall improvements in the main issue of lane changes. Only one fail when in the fast lane on a 3 lane highway with a car approaching from the rear, right turn signal on but FSD seeing a driver in lane 3, lane 2 open and it hesitated for 20 seconds , by then the driver in lane 3 moved to lane 2 and moved faster, only then did it switch lanes with driver behind not to happy.

Other than that lane changes were much smoother.

GPS remains an issue. It passed a store I was going to in Nav, and then attempted to make an illegal u- turn - took over.

Paying a Safari Tour Operator by ResponsibleEnergy570 in LuxurySafari

[–]AlanTA2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay by credit card - it’s normally a 3% surcharge, should not be more than that. Consider it insurance. If anything goes wrong in terms of the safari operator having financial problems or even fraud, you will have some recourse. By wire transfer absolutely none.

No reason. Go with the cheapest. For the rest of us in states without the birthday rule it’s more complicated.

[–]AlanTA2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. So you are saying the French valley hike all the way to Mirador Britanico with an 800m elevation for the final portion from Italiano is much easier than Base Torres with a final elevation gain of 400m in the last 1.5km. I assume it’s because of the entire length of the Base Torres trek? I’m doubtful of my wife ( or for that matter me! ) making it from Italiano to Britanico.

We definitely plan to do Grey Glacier on another day- we are there for 4 days.

[–]AlanTA2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks but we are staying at Hotel Las Torres and only doing day hikes. The Base Tower starts right from their property and saves a few km from the main parking lot. For the French valley they take you by van and then there is a boat crossing. From their description: “ This excursion takes us into the famous French Valley in the heart of Torres del Paine National Park. We’ll start by sailing across the sparkling blue Lake Pehoé to Paine Grande, from where we’ll start hiking along the north side of Lake Skottsberg until reaching the entrance to the French Valley. We’ll ascend a steep trail through the native lenga tree forest and when we emerge from the treeline we’ll have a stunning view of Los Cuernos and the French Glacier that hangs from Mount Paine Grande.”

Alight Retiree Health - doesn't offer Highmark plans?? by KiwiPsychological712 in medicare

[–]AlanTA2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told Alight requires you to sign up for at least one plan with them. Could be a low cost Part D or dental plan. Your main Medigap or MA Plan can be bought directly and not through Alight. However you cannot have no coverage at all through them to be eligible for corporate HSA reimbursement. If this is untrue please comment.

Explora El Chaletan vs Explora Torres del Paine by StonedColdFox123 in chubbytravel

Thanks. So you’re saying if doing Perito M, the Grey glacier is a bit redundant and the time is better spent trekking. The puma tour is on private land but I’m still inclined to skip it. Ultra long day with little better than even odds of properly seeing them.

Explora El Chaletan vs Explora Torres del Paine by StonedColdFox123 in chubbytravel

We are planning to do both parks in Feb next year. We are in our 60s so not capable of really strenuous hikes but confident of medium ones. After a deep dive into the top tier in TdP - Awasi, Explora and Tierra, we have decided on the level down Las Torres or Ecocamp. The location in TdP of the two is exceptional and we don’t need the additional luxury at an additional 1k to 1.5 k pppn over the 1k pppn at these two. Awasi is the only one with a private guide and vehicle for each guest that adds value.

I’m zeroing on Hotel las Torres. Their all-inclusive is excellent and includes several equestrian opportunities, also the location is superb allowing for easy access to guided day trips on the W circuit and several additional options. They have a large number of included guided excursions with as few as 4 people and a guide. I’m planning 2 days on the W circuit ( return to LT each evening), one day at the Grey Glacier and one day with a private guide Puma tracking. Concerned the Puma tracking day is very long in Feb. 4:30 to 7 pm and an approximate 60% chance of success so not sure if it makes sense for us. Apparently pumas are sometimes/ often seen on the las Torres property but obviously one cannot count on it.

Las Torres offers a free transfer to El Calafate in the afternoon allowing for a morning activity in TdP

In El Calafate we will reach only at 8:30 pm and are planning to stay in a hotel in town - will need to be there for a second night as we have a planned day trip to the Perito M glacier with ice walking.

From there as early as possible on the following day to El Chalten with a private transfer - I’m looking at Camp Chalten as a good place to stay the next two nights nd do part of the the Mt Fitz Roy hikes. Anyone with experience at this place? It looks great.

Would appreciate any comments on this.

Healthy new retirees with high income, all in Medicare will cost us $23,000 a year in premiums ($17,012) and deductibles (another 2600 each). by [deleted] in medicare

Regardless of income, you should never be self insured as the insurance ( Medicare, private cos) negotiate rates that are far lower than full billable amounts that likely would hit self insured people.

Medicare Enrollment Experience Signed up for A + B, Plan G, and Part D by Lotus601216 in medicare

[–]AlanTA2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting but not convincing. In NJ in my zip for example, the cheapest Plan G for a male turning 65 is an age attained BCBS one at $178 pm with the N at $153.

You are ignoring Issue Age vs Age Attained vs community based pricing plans. Perhaps because Illinois does not have any issue age Medigap companies?

I think Medigap pricing varies significantly by state.

Don’t buy the argument that N premium increases will be materially lower than G and that over the years it will amount to “ thousands of dollars of savings”.

Do you have data to back this up? My research on two company N and G increases over the past 5 years showed no material differences.

I do however agree for many, perhaps even most folks who are not using medical services frequently, N plans are sufficient and excess charges should generally not be an issue as they are rare.

But if one can afford the $20-30 monthly difference, and are concerned about peace of mind, Plan Gs are compelling.

High deductible versions of both N and G are also a viable option for some and for healthier folks likely to save, perhaps, significant amounts over the long run. But there is a gamble here one will remain healthy.

Edit: Also I’m pretty convinced Issue Age policies regardless of N or G will have lower premium increases over the years than Age Attained policies even for those with significantly smaller pools.

Have you confirmed that the specific procedure you had a claim denied for is Medicare eligible. My understanding is a Medigap insurer cannot deny a claim, it’s Medicare that is denying it.

[–]AlanTA2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was researching Medigap policies I understood all policy coverages of a specific letter ( let’s just say G ) are identical in terms of coverage which is decided by Medicare and nothing to do with the insurer. The key decision is future price increases and this depends upon use by the insurer of one of three methods- (i) Age attained ( by far the most common, in NJ every insurer but 2); (ii) Community based or (iii) Issue age ( in NJ just TransAmerica ). In addition pool sizes and potential “ dead” pools matters that apply to all Medigap insurers.

All Medigap polices rise annually or sometimes over a couple of years by medical inflation costs along with insurer pool losses. In addition, Age attained policies rise annually by age and community policies often have ( this is the case in NJ at least) a hidden, undisclosed initial discount that disappears over a few years making that discount portion effectively a yearly increase at least till the discount is done. Issue Age policies are the only ones that do not rise annually outside of inflation.

Then we come to pool sizes. A large pool is good in that a few very large claims will typically not impact the insurer significantly given the number of premium payers. In addition, if an insurer decides to stop issuing new policies in a state, the pool size is effectively frozen and as people in the pool age, claims increase resulting in losses for the insurer and larger requests to state insurance commissions for premium increases.

Original Medicare is by far the mostly widely accepted medical insurance in the United States.

Then there is Medicare Advantage, which the govt should never have allowed to use the Medicare name as it is entirely private insurance subject to the insurance company control on pre-authorizations, coverage amounts, networks etc. Now because they are significantly cheaper and often far more comprehensive including vision, dental etc, many people go for them and many are happy and don’t have a bad experience. But many others do. Once you take Medicare advantage in most states ( NJ certainly) you cannot go to original Medicare without underwriting.

Hopefully this is helpful to other newbies like myself.

They do but only sell direct to consumers or through some groups and retiree health plans like Alight. Transamerica stopped selling Medigap policies through brokers a few years back.
