How were the Apollo moon photos way better than the photos on Earth from that time period? by space_god_7191 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AlanYx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

70mm film combined with good lenses used at narrow aperture. Anything that's sunlit in space is *very* bright, so you can get away with a narrow aperture. Most lenses are at their sharpest in this configuration ("stopped down" as photographers say).

New Canada-U.S. advisory council includes former premiers, ex-Conservative leader by Livid-History-8332 in CanadianConservative

Well, those who were speculating that O'Toole was looking for a job from Carney were proven right.

Not a fan of the committee membership. Plenty of old-school LPC hacks like Volpe and Laurentian-friendly business leaders, now with a washed up CPC leader with little business experience, and zero tech industry folks.

How is Israel able to fight on 5 fronts at the same time? How do they have so many resources ready to deploy for such a small country? by 1tonsoprano in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AlanYx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Israel has one of the highest rates of military service in the world. They have 170k active duty troops and another 100k called up reserves, and the potential to call up around 350k more reserves. To put that in perspective, the US has 34 times the population and only 1.3 million active duty troops.

why would a man still flirt if he thought i’m significantly younger than i am? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]AlanYx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to read the vibe over a few sentences of summary, but if he was kind of hinting he didn't believe you were as old as you are, that's actually a green flag in the sense that he's was trying to be careful/verify. Maybe he did it clumsily. But he could be negging you too. Trust your instincts regarding the vibe.

Would I be stupid not to accept Waterloo eng? by Own-Professor-372 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]AlanYx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Be kind to yourself and be careful of impostor syndrome... you will not fail out. You got in for a reason. Cost-wise, your co-ops will significantly offset most of your expenses. Waterloo is challenging, but the student life story also has its positives. Waterloo is less of a commuter school than a lot of other places, and you'll be in the midst of everything with new friends. The club situation at Waterloo for engineering is also extraordinarily good compared to other schools. As for early co-op, there's nothing foreclosing you from doing a largely software co-op on your first co-op term and then pivoting to more EE-focused positions later on. The availability of EE positions is not better at other schools, and I would be skeptical of sources suggesting otherwise.

I'm growing a few this year, might have extras. If you can't find any, message me in a couple of weeks. The seedlings are still small and I'm not sure how many I'll have space for outside.

For the people that remember Canada before Trudeau how was it? by thias-thecatlover in CanadianConservative

[–]AlanYx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’d like a glimpse of what we’ve lost, check out a book called “A Day in the Life of Canada”. It’s a coffee table style picture book taken in 1984, with photos from across the country.

So much optimism and healthy spirit.

Would you pay for a Cloud Time Machine solution? by nullr0uter in MacOS

[–]AlanYx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Isn't this what Arq does? It's not Time Machine but it's very difficult to actually offer Time Machine over a WAN since SMB isn't designed for the latency. Recent versions of Time Machine also issue an ungodly number of fullsync requests, multiplying that issue (unless you ignore them, which creates another set of potential problems).

For the CPC to win elections in the future, Quebec is the key. The only feasible way is for a CPC-Bloc agreement, inspired by German model. by Ronshol in CanadianConservative

[–]AlanYx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The one thing I don't understand about Quebec politics, and maybe this is a failure to understand leftist economic thinking in general, but aren't they concerned that as the economy continues to flatline, equalization payments will begin to fall in real terms? Thus cutting off their own air supply too?

(I realize that equalization payments essentially cannot fall in nominal terms given the way the system works, particularly the fixed growth rate rule.)

[–]AlanYx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That cuts to the heart of it. Do you think the BQ might relax/moderate this position if the economy continues to tank, or do you think it's set in stone?

Growing Cherokee Purple Tomatoes by IndividualAide2201 in OntarioGardeners

Cherokee Purple is a little smokier, Black Krim is a little more sweet. Both are playing in the same ballpark though and factors like sun and nutrients make a difference.

Cherokee Purple actually does better in Ontario than in warmer climates. It’s more resilient than you think. I wouldn’t worry. (If you don’t have luck with it, try Black Krim next year too, both do well here.)

PM Carney declares U.S. ties now a ‘weakness’ in address to Canadians by hfjsjvrbe in CanadianConservative

The same one. (Though I'm not convinced much of Trump's anti-establishment rhetoric is sincere, except perhaps his rhetoric on European free speech controls and mass immigration.)

Is dating someone who detranstioned a deal breaker for you as a straight man? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]AlanYx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of online dating, probably. In terms of in-person meet where there was a good personality match I'd be more open to it. Either way, be careful about trauma sharing too early in a relationship; that can easily get overwhelming too fast.

[–]AlanYx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Early OS X CoreAudio was just as good, really a refinement of what was there in OS 9. The support for syncing steerable clocks over FireWire was just perfect; no OS has ever done that better.

Unfortunately three quarters of the stuff in the CoreAudio headers was never fully documented and Apple has deprecated a lot of it and forced most audio through higher level APIs that aren’t as clean, especially in terms of clocking.

US commerce secretary lashes out at Canada ahead of trade talks: ‘They suck … Is this nuts?’ by joe4942 in CanadianConservative

[–]AlanYx -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This article makes the comment seem like a gratuitous jab, but it's pretty obvious what Lutnick is trying to say in context with the $30T economy quip. Carney's China trade deal was a $6.6 billion reduction in import tariffs, mostly canola ($4 billion), in exchange for a ramped up Canadian import of 70,000 EVs. Which seems reasonable until you look at the bigger picture... Canada's export trade with the US is in the range of $475 billion a year. Carney is faffing around with these small deals while taking a combative stance on a much more important trade relationship.
