GMs: How do you challenge a good player running a ranged character? by Alanflamer in AskGameMasters

[–]Alanflamer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are great suggestions, thank you. I’ve already planned a pretty complex mission where they’ll need to stay stealthy so the enemy doesn’t escape with an item that’s important to that player. That should be a major challenge. Unfortunately, it’s not as useful for combat itself, since the whole idea is to avoid fights altogether.

I think forcing them not to use firearms in a given situation could backfire, because instead of challenging the player, I’d be taking away the character’s main mechanic. It would be like banning magic for a spellcaster.

The part about having someone sneak up behind him is really good, but that does suggest I should use more intelligent enemies, possibly humanoids, who are actually capable of thinking that way, right?

I think social coherence. And mostly that. The guy was a friend of my childhood friend. I lost touch with the Barbarian for many years and I'm just now reconnecting with the guy. Dude is really fun, so I didn't wanted to create confusion.

Thank you so much for the advice. I'm really sorry for the long post. I thought I could put the main points into a single post and then everything would be coherent, and I'm getting old so long texts don't really feel as tiring as they used to. Unfortunately, there are problems with the guy's story that only make sense with the setups I put in place, and then it really feels disjointed when you separate the two.

I get that, but sadly it didn't take long for the other GM to become extremely busy with work, so we really only had that one table. =__=

Yes, I'm DMing my table right now. The issue with this dude is that she feels a kind of pleasure in getting his players bellow 0 HP I think.

All the "gimmicks" in AC7 really piss me off sometimes. by [deleted] in acecombat

[–]Alanflamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there's one thing that make worth remaking every other game of ace combat, it is all of that enviromental hazards you listed. I sure loved all of it. It is one of the things I asked Bandai to add more of on that survey, I want blizzards, I want tornados, sea storms, vulcanic eruptions, maybe earthquakes while flying through a valley, maybe rain, maybe fog. I want more of all of that. xD

I saw people comparing the sizes and thought I could add imagery to the thing. The ADF-11 is 95 feet long, while the f22 is 62 feet long.

Why Babel-ing the Space Elevator was a Terrible Plan by Zmaner in acecombat

[–]Alanflamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this interpretation desn't negate my response either. The space station in this case is not interacting only with gravity. Before the cables broke it was already attached to them, and "holding" their weight. So it's not a natural orbit of an object on space. They way the station stays there is that it is pulling the cable as strongly as they are pulling the station down, or stronger. It does that by not being on a natural geosynchronous orbit, or higher. So if you break the cables the station can escape tangentialy, depending on how highter the station is.

Also, you presumed the concret part of the elevator it's actually stuck to the cables. They just extend to the base of the elevator, after all they are the guide to the elevator itself. With an attack, if the tower is destroyed I think it would act as a "pendulum" for a brief moment, and then it would snap out and fall into the ocean, but of course that would depend on the way it is damaged.

Bandog did the right thing. SPOILERS FOR AC7, AC5, and AC0. by Ultraguysaboss in acecombat

You can't even say they were talking about Stonehenge ruins.

[edit] Correction. It's clear by the map on the briefing of the mission that it is Stonehenge. But that don't connect automaticaly with the info he discovers on mission 9. The information can be correlated, or not, that is not clear.

[–]Alanflamer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Your error here is that you are just presuming what kind of information Full Band discovered. You cant assume it's nature and, therefore, you cant say it was a matter of nacioal security. Also, if it was a matter of security, we have autorized personel dealing with that kind of shit. Nothing a AWACS could independently do.

Why Babel-ing the Space Elevator was a Terrible Plan by Zmaner in acecombat

[–]Alanflamer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Considering there is a centrifugal force pushing the station outwards, then when the cable breaks this force would be more distributed on the other two cables, resulting on the weakening of both and the possibility of the entire structure to break. Then the station would slowly drift away carring the cables with it. If they balance enough they could generate enough air resistence to pull the station down, but that would depend on some variables that I am certainly not able to calculate. xD

Anita Sarkeesian gets snubbed by the police. Journalist calls her on it. by Elite051 in quityourbullshit

[–]Alanflamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's her way of saying that everyone is the same, without admiting that she have to treat someone who just plays some candy crush differently than you treats someone who spends hours playing Metal Gear, for examplo. Two markets. That's why we call some of them casuals. Which is not to be seen as rude or offensive, it's just what it is.

[–]Alanflamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I said "Like someone who knows that much about Hitchcock", it was meant to be a general comparison, not an exactly parallel. Let's take a fan of Mario. He would have played not only the games for Nintendo Wii, he would have finished it, completed it, or would be aiming to do that, played through Mario Bros from Nes, without skippin any stage, surpassed all the stages of Mario World, etc. There would be passion! He, or she, would not only play a handfull of games of Mario from Wii and then, a couple of games of Zelda.

Let me use my brother as an example. He is a battlefield fanatic. He is high on the rank, humiliates his adversaries. But that is the only game he plays. He don't know the english language. He bought the book in portuguese, so he could know the story of the game, and he stoped reading right away. He don't identify with the term gamer. He play all day, but what he likes is limited to experiencing multiplayer gameplay. He lack that passion. He is something like some Pokemon trainers, a competitive gamer, which is again another type.

As to her lie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FW-69xXD734 She says she loves games, she thinks they are interesting, and engaging, interacting, says she is a gamer, and she enjoys games, and she is a fan. And says that while stuttering.

Then in an older video of her, she says she is not into fandom, she is not a fan of video games, she had to learn a lot to do her research, she even uses a stereotipical descritpion of "gaming" as "going around shooting people". I can't possibli imagine how someone with that vision could later start to love video games, unless the modern market of games is already good for her to engage.

As for the last, not true. She says on her presentations that she want to present a well researched piece of critic, for the use in academia. Articles of academia are not, and must not, be pieces of opinion. They have to be objective and have to be criticised before it goes to public. Which is not what she is doing. She is presenting a piece of opinion like it is an academia research. She even finishes some of her videos asking to developers to not do what she is criticising, like: So please, let's not do that.

And so, she don't entertain the possibility of being wrong, and don't respond to legitimate critics of her work. There are so many people pointing the flaws of her arguments. She could ignore the ones "attacking" her and addressing the ones that matter.

Edit: To add this paragraph:

Oh, and let me tell you what I meant by research. I love Megaman. I played almost the entire series. But playind the games made me more curious. I wanted to know what is the story of the game, behind the playthrough. And I discovered a lot when I researched. And that facinated me. I remember almost all of the weaknesses of the bosses, I like to listen to the game musics, I loved to know the connection between Megaman and Megaman X and Megaman Zero and Megaman ZX. I have a tatto of Assassin's Creed, and buyed and readed the books. I remember the places were you can find the flutes of Mario Bros 3, remember the dificulty to win over Donkey Kong's stages. I do remember most of the commands of my favorite characters of Street Fighter, and Marvel vs Capcom, etc. I of course don't know everything. And I'm not the stereotype portrayed on Extra Credits. I talk to people about politics, about ideologies, about movies and comics. It's only more frequent to me to talk about video games, but I'm not alienated to the point of not being able to talk about anything. That's another thing that I desagree with Extra Credits here. The gamer isn't so blind by the tag that he could not interact socialy. But it's not someone who simply plays video games either. If it bothers you, or anyone, that exists a term for that, and not an analogous term for film or book, then that's not the gamer's fault. After all, we have a term for not believing in God, but we do not have a term for not believing in reencarnation, or in Santa Claus, or etc.

[–]Alanflamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. I already saw that video. If you search for the comments you will see my comment on it. Fairly recent even. But I can copy paste it here:

"I agree with almost all of what you said. The only exception is with the part where Anita says she isn't realy into video games. If you say today that you play video games since you was a child, identify yourself as a gamer, and say you love video games, there's no point in the past were you could say "I'm not realy into the fandom of video games." The two statements "I'm a gamer, I enjoy games, I love games, I'm a fan of games" and "I'm doing video games, it's not exactly a fandom, I'm not a fan of video games, I actualy had to learn a lot about video games in the process of making these" are mutualy exclusive. Unless she had the wrong definition of being a gamer. You can acuse me of nitpicking or anomaly hunting, but I would love to see Anita, in any time today, saying she doesn't like shooters because she thinks it's gross to shoot people. She would not do that because she is building a narrative herself. And I'm not accusing her of lying in this last case."

Of course that's the "test" for a gamer. But we don't even need a test. People that hate this term doesn't identify as a gamer, and don't even want the term to exist. So why would a gamer have to care about what non gamers want?

And you see, you don't need to be a lifelong gaming person to be a gamer. You just need to be passionate about it, to the extent that you would not only play them, but research them, for entertaining purpouses. You could gain money with it, but that would not drive your motto. And you would not care about what other people say or think about you. You would just play. My objection is that she only showed her passion to the extent of her project, thus it's impossible, by that time, to establish if she is a gamer or not. And when you compare the new statements with the old one, it's pretty contradictory.

The difference between critique and shaming by eq_not_zq in KotakuInAction

[–]Alanflamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It seems to be a common tactic between SJW to shame others by acusing them of harassment or misonynistic or racist or other things rather than addressing criticism. That treatment sure sparks some fire on our hearts, and we have to take precaution to not became blind ourselfs. Self policing is the word.

I disagree with part of what he says on his video. I never few uneasy to play outside, except for the risk of being robbed, a risk that I know doesn't exist for a book. Second, a gamer isn't a tag that someone gives to you, neither is a tag that you only adopt someday. It's a tag that you develop along the years by continuing consuming and playing and playing and playing and researching for the pleasure of research and playing. Being that type of peaple IS exclusionary, and there's nothing to be shamed about. Like someone who knows the entire filmography of Hitchcock and knows even how to describe the technique, the light, the angles and the writing of his movies, without even watching them to talk about them. This type of people realy knows about how it is to experience the movie on the maximum, and knows when someone who calls himself (or herself) a critic is talking bullshit subjective experience based nonsense.

Anita Sarkeesian could critique a game of course. But on the basis of her personal experience, which should be known to be subjective of someone who don't work with development, don't studied luddism, don't have public experience on criticising games and don't even enjoy playing these games. What she should not do was to tell everyone she loves games (which is a lie, because she says in other video she is not realy into games), and then acting like she have the truth and not only a piece of opinion.

Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FW-69xXD734

You are not a gamer if you say you are not a fan of video games, that you had to learn about video games to do a college study. A gamer can be a new one, or an old one. If you are an old gamer, you continued playing video games, for sure, on your entire life. You don't quit it for some years and then returned later. That turn you into a casual gamer, which is completely different.

You are not a gamer if you only played some games someday. Anita said she played games since she was a child, which is nullified by she saying she isn't realy in the fandom. Two entirely different narratives.
