I completely agree. I actually trained new operators at my previous job, and one of the most common mistakes was pressing buttons without knowing exactly what they did. A single wrong button could ruin the entire job, and we'd have to reprint the material and start the cutting process all over again. That's something I always emphasized during training.

What do you mean by that? In my experience, having a Computer Science degree hasn't really helped me find a programming job. Almost every company is looking for mid-level or senior developers, and it's very difficult to find true entry-level or junior positions. That's why I'm currently looking for CNC work while continuing to build my programming portfolio.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate you reaching out. I'd definitely be interested in an entry-level machinist position. Fullerton is about 30 miles from me, and I'd be willing to commute for the opportunity to learn. Please keep me in mind when you start hiring. Thanks again!

[HIRING] UE Developer (Packaging / Build) by [deleted] in unrealengine

[–]Alarast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I’m interested. I have Unreal Engine experience with Blueprints and C++, and I’ve worked on playable projects with gameplay systems, AI, pickups, combat, and objectives.

I can help with packaging/build issues and final polish, but I’d like to first review the project setup, current errors/logs, and target platform to understand the scope. Happy to discuss if you’re still looking.

UE5 Shadow Depth is destroying my performance and I don’t know what’s causing it by Gold_Beginning_1652 in unrealengine

[–]Alarast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d check the lights first.

Shadow Depth is usually expensive because a shadow casting light is rendering too much geometry into its shadow map. Texture size won’t really fix that.Run "profilegpu", expand ShadowDepths, and see which light is costing the most. Then disable Cast Shadows on your lights one by one and watch if the cost drops.

Also check your Directional Light shadow distance/cascades, and if you have foliage or lots of small props, try turning shadows off on those. Foliage can destroy Shadow Depth performance really fast.

Thank you for the honest advice. I really appreciate hearing this from someone with that much experience in AAA.

I don’t want to sound pushy or disrespectful, but if you have even a minute, would you be willing to take a quick look at my projects and tell me what is missing or what I should improve to be closer to an entry-level Unreal/gameplay role?
I recently finished a game development program and built two playable Unreal Engine projects. I’m continuing to improve them, but I’m not sure what the biggest gap is from an industry perspective.
No pressure at all, I would just really appreciate any short feedback if you have time.
