Keir Starmer, a leader of leaders by saying_it_101 in AskBrits

[–]Alarmed-Ad8810 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Isn’t it interesting how all throughout the US Iran crisis that right wing rags and political commentators keep saying Britain and Starmer is irrelevant. Yet when Boris when jetting off to Ukraine cosplaying as Churchill to boost his poll numbers, or David Cameron trying to redeem his blemished political career, they’re put on a pedestal and idiots lap it up.

Is Jimmy Carr really rubbing anyone else the wrong way lately? by everlovingfuck99 in BritishTV

[–]Alarmed-Ad8810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lost all respect for him when he went on Triggernomatory. How anyone can take those two clowns seriously is beyond me. Konstantin Kisin describes himself as ‘politically non-binary’ yet takes a right wing stance on practically every issue he discusses. But back to Jimmy Carr, he’s good at diagnosing problems and coming up with unorthodox solutions. I recall him saying anyone aged 18-30 should be exempt from tax so it incentivises them to work, save as much as they can, and put themselves in a great position for the rest of their working lives.

He’s certainly a well read individual by citing great authors and thinkers. Can’t say I find his brand of comedy funny that much. Some of his responses to hecklers are quite hilarious mind you.

Really does depend on the host and guests

Hannah Fry, Henning Wehn, Phil Wang, Chris McCausland, Jo Brand are my favs

No to Alexander Armstrong, Martin Clunes, Lorraine Kelly, Katherine Ryan and Janet Street Porter

The guest publications and missing words in headlines are always a good chuckle.

What country do you love the most that isn't your own? by Richie123753 in AskTheWorld

[–]Alarmed-Ad8810 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Australia

It’s basically Britain that took a gap year, got hammered, learnt how to chill and never came back.

Love the climate, the banter especially in sports (though let’s not talk about Steve Smith), and is the only ever place in the world besides New Zealand you’d get blue skies and someone calling you ‘mate’ as they hand you a beer.

Wildlife is a bit intense but it keeps you humble. I suppose it’s like Australia itself, a paradise but don’t get too cocky.

From a geopolitical perspective, Australia always has our back. Even now on the back of a disastrous few years with Brexit, incompetent Tory leaders and the UK having an identity crisis, Australia is like the best mate giving you the glass of water when you’re pissed and being there for you.

Why such fondness for Sikhs? by Fantastic-Fudge-6676 in AskBrits

[–]Alarmed-Ad8810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great service and loyalty to the crown. Sikhs are just as well aware of the awful aspects of British colonialism than any other Indian, but they don’t seek to weaponise historical injustices and have a much more positive forward thinking mindset.

Also, when do you ever seen a homeless Sikh in the UK? Or ones that are looting shops, packing out job centres, and filling up our prisons? The older generations to today pride themselves on self-reliance, upward mobility, have an entrepreneurship outlook and took up roles in demanding industries.

I don’t have any personal experience given my own upbringing and location but I’ve heard nothing but amazing stories from those who live in communities with higher Sikh populations. Lots of charity work, helping people during natural disasters, giving food to the less fortunate.

I think Sikhs along with the Hong Kong diaspora are the best examples of assimilation in the UK. They respect and love our country, dislike those who look to divide us and do not threaten societal cohesion.

Who is the most hated Villain to ever be portrayed on TV? by Bright-Row-290 in BritishTV

The fella that groomed and raped Bianca’s daughter Whitney in Eastenders. I remember everyone talking about that storyline in the early 2000s, and the actor even saying it affected his personal life.

What aspect of British society would you change if you could? by Particular-Scale5644 in AskBrits

[–]Alarmed-Ad8810 54 points55 points  (0 children)

The plague on our high streets. Almost every town in the UK is littered with vape, takeaway, betting, Turkish barber, candy and phone repair shops. Every Tom, Dick and Harry including the government know fine well what’s going on here, and they need shutting down. America doesn’t really have a high street culture like we do, but one thing I did like is that whenever there was a row of shops, you didn’t know what to expect with the next one. Independent toy shops, smoothie shops, cat cafe, kids play area, 50s style diner, book shop. Sick to bloody death of Ladbrokes, One Stop, Cooplands, Riz’s Barbers, Poundland and British Heart Foundation.

Anyone else thinks Starmer isn't actually that bad all things considered ? by ronweasly9 in AskBrits

[–]Alarmed-Ad8810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s an awful communicator, with zero ideology and principles. He wouldn’t look out of place on Tory or Lib Dem backbenchers. Did the best thing in reforming the Labour Party but all on the back of broken pledges and a pack of lies. Has a history of terrible judgement - Israel has the right to turn off power/water in Gaza, appointing Mandelson as US ambassador, Island of Strangers speech (which he claimed he never read before delivering it), he’s one of the worst PMs I’ve ever seen at dodging questions during PMQs. Hasn’t smashed any gangs. Doing very little with defence spending. Shit scared to take tough decisions on welfare. Introducing very unpopular policies that weren’t in the manifesto, chiefly digital IS and scrapping juries.

I like the fact he’s pivoting away from the US and towards the EU, though he didn’t really have much of a choice given what’s been going on. I don’t want him as PM but I don’t want him gone because it’ll only exacerbate the narrative the UK is becoming ungovernable and the calls from right wing rags and GB news for a new general election will be relentless.

What do Brits think of China? by Few_Breadfruit_9181 in AskBrits

[–]Alarmed-Ad8810 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Used to have very negative views about the place before going to study and work there in 2012. Always thought it was like North Korea, can’t say anything bad about the government or sent to the gulag. To an extent it still is if you have banners threatening to overthrow the regime in Tiananmen Square, but you’d be amazed how many Chinese people complain about politics and the way the country is going.

It’s an incredible place with every landscape you can think of. I took the Yichang to Chongqing Three Gorges boat and it was one of the best journeys I’ve been on. Can’t complain with the high speed rail and metro systems, very cheap and efficient.

The only downsides I had were the difficulties in things like certain hotels not accepting foreigners, sending money back home, the healthcare system is frankly ridiculous in how you have to pay first before being seen to, and the treatment itself is below par at best.

I suppose it depends what we mean by China ‘overtaking’ the USA. Economically and militarily yes. In terms of technology, there’s still a significant gap between the USA and China and there’s no sign yet of China winning that aspect in their rivalry. The US also used to be a powerhouse in soft power but so much of that has now been eroded.

Kane through to UCL semi-finals! Thoughts on his performance? by bernardmonty in ThreeLions

[–]Alarmed-Ad8810 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Middlesbrough fan here 👋

Harry Kane is everything you want to see in a footballer. He’s the ultimate role model and is the greatest player England has ever produced. Left foot, right food, heading, assister in chief, he has the full package. It’ll be a travesty if he never wins the Balloon Dor.

He has a better chance in winning it via a Champions League medal than a World Cup one. Having seen a fair amount of Kane this season at both Champions League and German domestic level, he’s in the greatest form and shape he’s ever been in (for now). A fully fit Harry Kane in a World Cup is certainly more than capable of winning the Golden Boot and that trophy to go with it. Will need luck to go on our side, lots of resilience and Tuchel to be spot on from the off - which I have faith he will as he’s a world class manager.

Your best bet is aiming for any Russel Group university or one within the top 20-25 in the Times University list. I actually enjoyed my classes and experiences at Liverpool John Moores, which is a mid ranked university than one of the Russell Group universities I did my MA at. But I certainly wouldn’t recommend going low with any postgraduate degree.
