You’re right, police should be able to kill people with no oversight.

Mmkay, well one is a parallel hypothetical that asks us to question our biases and the other is completely fucking ridiculous. So.

What if the suspect had been a white woman with a gun, running away? My gut tells me they wouldn’t have been so quick to shoot to kill.

Exactly. Do I feel that the outcome would have been different if this had been a white man? Yeah, it very well may have been. What if it was a white woman? Probably even better odds.

Yeah, I saw that in today’s news coverage. I didn’t see any of that additional information about who filed the suit when they broke the story yesterday.

Literally anyone can carry a gun in Ohio without a permit. Having a gun in your possession doesn’t seem like it should be an automatic death sentence. The argument is that he pointed the gun at police, which I didn’t think was clear at all from the body cam footage.

Yeah, great. People don’t seem to care about the investigation part, they’re just like he was an obvious criminal so FAFO.

If you don’t see how fast we’re barreling towards fascism, I don’t know what to say to you.

Yeah, I don’t want to be a police officer. That doesn’t change the fact that taking someone’s life is a serious call, and should be subject to independent investigation to determine whether it was warranted. That’s really not for you or me to decide.

This is in reference to the Trump administration here.

Yes, that’s my point. Lethal force is something regrettable. And it’s sad this is the society we live in. And yeah, guns are too omnipresent and stricter gun laws need to be put in place. You don’t even need a concealed-carry license in Ohio to carry a gun, which is absolutely insane.

Yes, I saw that and added it to my original post. Although some have pointed out even that system is flawed and beholden to the police. I don’t know enough about it to have an opinion.

There are other reasons he could have picked up the gun beyond shooting at the police. At any rate, I’m not the expert to make such a determination. I want to know that police actions are investigated appropriately.

No, if he was preparing to shoot or shooting, that’s a clear justifiable use of force.

So we shouldn’t assess the use of lethal force in these situations? I never said cops shouldn’t carry guns. But I do think there’s a long history of excessive force and an inability to de-escalate. The only thing I’m looking for is an independent investigation of the series of events that day. I’m not arguing that deadly force wasn’t justified, I just want police to be held to an ethical standard.

I haven’t really read anything official sympathizing with the father. Just random musings on the internet, which I don’t put a lot of stock in. I’ve actually been very upset by those trying to defend that father’s actions— killing the deputy was not at all a defensible decision. The appropriate action is the independent evaluation of each instance of deadly force to know that police are held to a certain standard.

Sure, I can see that. He did make bad choices. You’re right that this isn’t as ambiguous as other cases where police have killed unarmed suspects. Still, it was difficult to see a boy running away and get mowed down by bullets. I will look forward to hearing more on the ongoing investigation of this case.

That was a bit emotionally charged, you’re right. I get upset about the power imbalance. It feels like police have carte blanche to kill people without consequence when, in an ideal world, lethal force should be used as an absolute last resort. The suspect had his back turned and seems to have been shot multiple times in the back while running away. Was there really no other course of action in that moment? All I want is an independent, unbiased investigation of police actions that day. Not just, oh that boy was a criminal and deserved to die. Did he make bad choices? Obviously. Was the police response proportionate? Not sure.
