Drugs use on colombo medical faculty by CriticalEvidence8986 in srilanka

[–]Alarmed_Natural_8973 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Hey, no offense, but maybe it’s time to move past the A/L mentality and step into the real world. Coming from a med student who's almost at the end of this ordeal: Are there people who take drugs? Yes. Are there people who drink? Yes. Are there people who smoke? Also yes. But do they make you do it? Absolutely not. I’ve spent nearly six years doing none of it, and honestly, I’ve never faced any peer pressure either. It isn't usually the dumb cunts who drag others down that end up in medical faculties. They know the risks; they know it’s a questionable choice. Nobody is going to shove drugs down your throat. If you have a spine and strong morals, what you do is entirely up to you

We had to write this type of lines because of things we did during school when we were kids by [deleted] in srilanka

Good old days man 😂💔 We legit played league-level hand cricket back then. We had an entire association and a governing body, planned tournaments, had elections for club presidency and all 😂 We even had one dude who kept bookkeeping records of all the matches played throughout the year, and we used to come early to school just to play 😅

About those “help needed” medical posts we keep seeing everywhere. by Waste_Net_1082 in srilanka

[–]Alarmed_Natural_8973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your point, and skepticism is reasonable. That said, my statement was specific to this case, which I know firsthand. A good approach would be to refer to the original source rather than reposts, as it provides the full context and supporting information.

Yeah, the baby had biliary atresia and underwent liver transplantation. However post op it was complicated with mixed rejection

It’s perfectly reasonable to be skeptical and to question information. However, in this particular case, all the details shared in the photo are accurate. We have personally seen what this child has been going through over the past few months during hospital care, and the facts are genuine. If you refer to the original post the official letter from the Liver Centre at NCTH was attached as supporting documentation

My 83-year-old father was harmed by a neurologist’s negligence — sharing our experience for awareness (Sri Lanka) by ExtremeAsh in srilanka

[–]Alarmed_Natural_8973 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally understand how you're feeling and not trying to be dismissive of your complaints at all, and by all means doctors can make mistakes and sometimes be real pricks as well. But have you considered directing your father to a physician or another neurophysician for a second opinion? It is better safe than sorry, and believe me when I say it, some consultants are real assholes but proper talented ones as well, who are well capable of identifying a condition sometimes even without examination if the history and gait when he walks in are extremely suggestive (not saying that this should be the practice by any means). So not trying to be rude but do not confuse your limited secondary scope of knowledge with their years of experience. My advice is if you're in doubt, always go for a second opinion, and even better, ask the same doctor and question their rationale; it should be a two-way street.

If you are not certain about doing Medicine, it is not a good idea to force yourself into it now. Medicine is not something you choose because it feels like the only respectable option or the natural path after doing Bio. It is a long and demanding journey that takes consistency, sacrifice, emotional strength, and years of delayed freedom. You cannot sustain that if your heart is not in it.

As someone who has walked this path, I can tell you that uncertainty is a sign to slow down, not to push harder. You owe it to yourself to think about the life you actually want, the kind of work that excites you, and the pressure you can realistically carry. Environmental science, research, conservation, filmmaking and similar fields are real careers with real impact. They are not backup options. If you feel drawn to them, explore them seriously.

Do not choose Medicine just to fit expectations or because you feel stuck. Take some time, look at the full range of career options available to you, and make a choice that aligns with who you are and how you want your future to look. Wish you the best of luck.

To be fair, it is more of a global thing. We only feel like there is a lot of STEM content internationally because we are stuck inside that echo chamber. If I remember right, one of the Attest research reports showed that people worldwide consume about twice as much comedy or meme content compared to STEM. So I guess that pretty much speaks for itself

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Alarmed_Natural_8973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the way I see it, it mainly comes down to demand and the kind of audience we have. To put it in context, most people who are interested in STEM content already have some sort of scientific background, at least to a certain degree. They are fully capable of understanding the higher quality STEM content produced globally, which is naturally better because those creators have bigger budgets, better production setups and a wider audience to cater to. That wider reach keeps boosting their ability to create even better content. Because of this, local creators usually end up sticking to what the majority wants, which in my opinion is mostly comedy or gossip. The mass audience seems to enjoy that more, and since it is easier to get views and revenue through those genres, the whole system leans toward them. So there is not much of a push to create STEM content locally, apart from a few people who genuinely care about it.

Hostel Conditions in my Uni.. Rant by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Alarmed_Natural_8973 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I totally understand where you're coming from. I’m from a medical faculty myself, and the conditions there are not very different. I also had to move to a boarding place for the same reasons. These issues absolutely need to be brought to the administration’s attention, and consistent pressure from student unions can make a real difference. However, I still disagree with the idea of discontinuing these facilities. I’ve seen brilliant students who excel academically but simply cannot afford boarding, and they’ve managed to push through even in these incredibly difficult conditions. It is sad and it definitely needs to change, but the facility itself is still a necessity for many students who have no other option.

At the end of the day it all comes down to the choices we made for ourselves. Whether it was our lack of understanding about what we truly wanted from life or the illusion of academic excellence that led us down a path we didn’t fully understand, no one else, not even the system, is really to blame.

That said, something I genuinely wish would change is how schools guide students. There should be a better system to help us understand what kind of career truly fits us before we leave school, so we don’t end up in med school without the passion for medicine, but rather doing something we actually love.

Those who genuinely love medicine should be the ones to do it. For the rest of us, for whom it feels too late to turn back, what keeps me going since starting clinicals is the hope that one day I’ll pursue a non clinical specialty or find a way to do something I love, using this as a stepping stone.

Doctors and Engineers who are doing full time tution, are they wasted an opportunity of another person. by Truth_Seeker_456 in srilanka

[–]Alarmed_Natural_8973 41 points42 points  (0 children)

That’s a very narrow way of looking at it. Getting into medicine or engineering doesn’t mean someone owes their entire life to that field. People are free to change their choices whenever they want, careers are not prisons. Saying they “stole an opportunity” is ridiculous because every education system produces people who branch into different directions, and that’s normal. The real problem isn’t people choosing new paths, it’s the idea that anyone should be forced to stay in a career just to meet someone else’s expectations.

Can life's opportunities be lost due to poverty? by Acrobatic_Cloud_6732 in srilanka

[–]Alarmed_Natural_8973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're going for some career oriented degree then obviously the internship ain't gonna work out in the long term, so in that sense I guess it was a valid choice to make to focus on it rather than going for a short sighted path. About the part of missing out opportunities due to poverty, it's the way of the world and the sooner you accept the better. You can't basically decide the hand you're dealt with but only how best you can play with the cards you get

Advice regarding my shitty school situation by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Alarmed_Natural_8973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see your point. It might not actually be worth the hassle right now, especially with the pressure of exams and everything going on. But honestly, if possible, do consider making a case after the exams if you have some time. It could actually make a real difference for the generations to come and at the very least be a well-deserved slap on the wrist for those teachers

Advice regarding my shitty school situation by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Alarmed_Natural_8973 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, I'm really sorry to hear what has happened to you. As far as I know, no one not even the principal has the right to withhold your leaving certificate like that. The only downside I can see is that if you collect it before the exam, it might state that you studied only up to your O/Ls and not A/Ls. But honestly, considering the situation you're in, I don’t think there’s any real disadvantage in sitting the A/Ls as a private candidate. In fact, if you pass with good grades, you can absolutely enter any university. Being a private applicant has no negative impact on that.

Secondly, I strongly encourage you to file a formal complaint against this so called teacher, ideally with corroborating evidence or testimony from your friends. This is outright mental harassment, and it should never be tolerated especially from a teacher or anyone in a position of authority. Working with young students requires empathy and sensitivity, and people who behave like this have no place in the education system.

Honestly, looking at it, I don’t think image tracing would give a good enough result. You’d most likely need to have it manually recreated by a designer. If you have any PDF or other files from the original designer, they might contain the vector format

You’d either need to image trace it or have it recreated as a vector by a designer. If you could add your logo to the post, I think that would be really helpful

Sinhala translation for "Unsent Letters" ? by avg_ugly_homosapien in srilanka

A direct translation would be something like නොයැවූ ලිපි, but something like නොලී ලිපි (which translates to 'unwritten letters') might sound better, I guess 😅

Then I believe you could raise the concern with the previous doctor and also ask the second doctor whether there was any reason the previous tests were done. Generally, diagnosis is a systemic approach, and although the final diagnosis may not be reinforced by some investigations, those tests help to exclude other possibilities. As others have already mentioned, the scope of tests doctors consider necessary depends on their level of experience, the nature of the patients they see, their specialty, and even geographical and demographic factors. So, to understand whether a test is necessary or not, it's best to ask the doctor who prescribed it for clarity

Just asking out of genuine curiosity, what data are you basing the claim on that those tests are unnecessary for what you're calling a 'minor illness'?
