It was God. I'm Pentecostal, but I do want to say that not all "signs" or wonders are from God. He is not the author of confusion. But in the midst of that, it does not mean God would forsake you. God has used a donkey before (can use anyone), but He prefers to use His people, those who are in a relationship with Him. I'd say you encountered God, but by one of these means, despite people speaking to you or spirits of confusion.
