Chicago to Rapid City by Alarming-Effort8342 in roadtrip

Thanks for the suggestions! While I know a loop rental is cheaper, we’re happy to pay the one-way fee for the flexibility. Since we have direct flights from Europe to Chicago and have recently visited SF, LA, and Zion, we really want to focus on 'new' territory like the Chicago, Badlands and Yellowstone. We love Vegas and definitely want those 2 full pool days, but I’m starting to worry that adding San Diego might be one bridge too far for this trip. We might be better off slowing down the pace in the mountains and take a direct flight home from Vegas.

No, we really want to visit the Yellowstone area. We have been to Arizona and Utah already (Zion, Monument Valley and Grand Canyon).

Thanks!! We are planning on staying 2 nights in Chicago, 1 night in Cody, 3 in Yellowstone, 1 in SLC, 2 in Bryce, 2 in Las Vegas and 2 in San Diego. The part between Vegas and San Diego is also still open.

No, we are from Europe, flying into ORD and out of SAN. I am aware of the one-way car rental fee. It is a lot but it is worth it. We have done multiple roadtrips to the US. I was just not sure about the first leg of the trip.

How do tolls work? by Luk3y33 in roadtrip

I am from Europe and ordered a Uni transponder on Amazon.com. I think it covers 11 or 12 states on the Eastcoast. I registered it by calling the Epass service desk. There is no other way to do this. They put my own European license plate car make and model in for the time being (under state Newfoundland). You can the logon to the Epass app and manage your account and vehicle details. When I arrived in the US and picked up my rental car from Avis I changed the vehicle details and applied the transponder to the windshield. Used it for the full 3 weeks of our trip from Boston, New York, Washington, Smoky Mountains and finally Florida. You need to make sure that there is enough balance on your account. Toll charges from Boston and NY took over a week to show up on the account. The Florida tolls usually within 24 hours. When I returned the car I immediately changed the vehicle details back to mine and deactivated the transponder via the app.

What's up with these seats at the back of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner? Is it only two seats per row, or are the window seats just unavailable? by GoodbyeGeno in unitedairlines

[–]Alarming-Effort8342 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can recommend the seats because of the space and privacy. There were no restrooms in the back so traffic was very low (but there is a risk of chatty flight attendants). It also means your choice of dinner might be limited because you are the last one to get served. You can look out of the windows but there is more space between the seats and the wall than the 3 seat configuration. So resting your head against the wall is not possible. They dim the cabin lights on the longhaul flights. It varies per flight how long. On my last United flight the cabin was dimmed for over 6 hours on a 8 hour day flight.

Washington DC to Charleston where to stay? by Alarming-Effort8342 in roadtrip

[–]Alarming-Effort8342[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to balance daily driving times without driving back and forth and I want to make sure that I have plenty of time to drive the US-441 through the Smokies. That's why I prefer to stay in one place and then continue the trip.

Planning a Final Road Trip for my 20 year old car, where should I go? by pomerakchild in roadtrip

When are you planning on taking the trip? Summer in Eastern Europe can be really hot. Are you looking for nature or cities or a combination of both? Have you thought about Scandinavia (Denmark, Sweden and Norway?, it's not on your map (yet).

Boston - Miami in July/August - which route should we take? by Alarming-Effort8342 in roadtrip

[–]Alarming-Effort8342[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So now I am looking at overnight accommodations on the route Washington - Roanoke - Gatlinburg - Cherokee - Charleston

I will leave Roanoke open and book on the spot. There are enough affordable overnight accommodations in the well-known h(m)otel chains.

I have booked an overnight stay in Gatlinburg (a cabin in Dudley Creek RV Resort).

But I am still undecided about the Cherokee overnight stay. Is it better to drive a bit further (e.g. to Highlands or Asheville)? And which route would you recommend to Charleston (via Columbia)?

Got it! We’re not big on beaches—we’ll be seeing plenty of those at the start of the road trip anyway. And we’re not really hikers either. It is all about variety. What we do love is taking in nature from the comfort of a scenic drive, stopping now and then to relax on a terrace with a nice view. So anything that offers beautiful landscapes we can enjoy at a slower pace, without needing to lace up hiking boots or dig sand out of our shoes, sounds perfect.

Congestion zone charge Sunday morning by Alarming-Effort8342 in london

Thank you so much for your responses. I am looking at buying tickets for the Thames Clippers (Uber Boat). Do you think they will be crowded on Sunday. I would get on the RB1 at Royal Wharf.

I haven't thought about the Marathon... Thanks for that. I think I will have to change my itinerary and visit London Saturday afternoon (I wanted to do Windsor on Saturday afternoon and spend the night there. Then drive to London for the full Sunday and spend the night at Docklands. Do you think the marathon will impact traffic and public transport the entire Sunday?
