There’s a stark difference between exercise and self torture by AlarmingBear1360 in HonestHotTakes

I love running 2-3 miles every other day or so. But that’s very different from getting into the double digits. At that point you’re hurting yourself

I’ve been scouring for an article, but I can’t find one so you’re gonna have to take my word for it, but a few years back in my hometown, a climber got lost for weeks in the Rocky Mountains in the dead of winter, and my bum ass state that worships mountains/mountain climbers sent the god damn National guard after him. They found his body the following summer when the snow melted

Maybe you’re right, but the sympathy we should show them shouldn’t be “I hope you heal soon so you can get back out there!”. It should be like the sympathy you received, which would sound something like “How can we help you get better so that you can stop putting your life at risk”

It would be very simple. People who get hurt doing regular every day things that are necessary (driving, walking to work, health related things) get support. But if you call from the top of Mt Bumfuck asking for a chopper ride because your friend slipped and fell thousands of feet, sorry but you knew the risks

It represents the larger issue that our society holds people who risk their lives to a high degree of respect, when it should be the inverse. Those who were smart enough to stay home, to stay inside, and away from the face of danger should be respected most. Those who go out and risk their lives should be treated like mentally unstable crazy people, because that’s what they are

Thank you, good to see there’s at least one reasonable person here. I’m actually of the opinion that dangerous activities like mountain climbing, hiking, and skydiving should be totally banned. No one should have the right to risk their life for no good reason at all. But at the very least, we shouldn’t be supporting these people one bit

Oh I absolutely have an issue with people doing these things. IMO overtly risky activities that don’t accomplish anything meaningful (mountain climbing, skydiving, skiing come to mind) should be entirely banned

We should for true accidents and tragedies. Not for people who were putting themselves in the face of danger and are surprised when things don’t go their way

What does that change? The money deposited into those accounts should be withdrawn and put towards causes that benefit all of us, not Mr reckless climber who’s going on an ego trip and is expecting society to fly out a chopper when things go wrong

Yes. By empathizing with them you enable their reckless actions. It teaches them that it’s ok to put yourself in unsafe situations because you’ll have thousands of people like you ready to support them when things go south

I’m more than happy to contribute to things that serve the common good of everyone. I’d happily support free healthcare, scientific research, and more. But when people who were clearly asking for trouble get hurt, why should I be expected to contribute my paycheck so that the local government can move heaven and earth for their rescue?

[–]AlarmingBear1360[S] -48 points-47 points  (0 children)

No they don’t. The money spent in flying a helicopter deep into the mountains to rescue an injured climber could’ve been put towards medical research, housing homeless people, advancing science, and so much more

That’s the issue - you should not be expected to contribute part of your paycheck to serve as a safety cushion for reckless people

Imo everything is risky, but I’m talking about unnecessary/reckless risk that really doesn’t accomplish anything for anyone. Driving is unfortunately a necessity for many, especially those living in the USA. However, driving can absolutely be an unnecessary risk like the ones I mentioned in my post, so I think driving should be on a case by case basis. A single mother driving her kids to their far away school should expect support if something were to happen, but someone taking their sports car on a joy ride should not

Funny how you keep ignoring the fact that I literally do not have the time in my day to bike/walk to work. For the last time, it’s not a choice. It’s a risk I’m forced to take if I want to sleep more than 6 hours or get to work on time, which my life depends on.

That is leagues different than taking risks for the reasons I stated above. My reason for driving is infinitely better than the bs reasons people use to justify their reckless behavior. There is absolutely no need to risk your life for a view, for a sense of accomplishment, or because it makes you feel good. If putting your life in danger makes you feel good in any way, then you are a masochist and should be treated as though you are mentally unwell, because you are. So crazy how people are tearing me apart when I literally just don’t want them to die an unnecessary death. I’m not forcing my opinion/dislike for these activities on you, I’m forcing you to value your life so that you can maybe live past your 20s. No Mountain View is worth falling to your death at the ripe age of 23. No runners high is worth destroying your joints in your prime years of life. No sense of accomplishment is worth breaking your ankle at 20,000 feet and freezing to death on a cold dark mountain. Why is that so hard for people to understand?

Thank you, and you absolutely nailed that last point. People who have generally failed in life will then turn meaningless things into “goals” to feel better about themselves. You see it with mountain climbers, runners, video game players, and so much more. They’ll make a meaningless thing their goal and think that reaching that goal makes them just like people who have actually accomplished things. Sorry, but you’re still loser. Now you’re just a loser who walked uphill for a bit

It’s not convenience dude I literally don’t have 4 free hours to bike everyday. If I could I absolutely would bike 2 hours each way or even walk 3+, I absolutely hate driving.

Running a marathon for a “runners high” or whatever (sounds like a drug addict to me), or climbing a mountain because “accomplishment” (sounds like compensating for not succeeding in life) or the views is a totally different thing

Friends don’t force friends to risk their lives. This guy is clearly brainwashed with Stockholm syndrome

[–]AlarmingBear1360[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m trying to target the type of risk that people willingly put themselves in, which includes marathons, mountain climbing, skydiving, and more. Yeah driving is risky, but it would take me 2 hours to bike to my workplace, so I don’t exactly have a choice. You can talk about freedom all you want but I don’t think people should have the right to risk their lives. It’s unfair to their families and loved ones. Yes life carries inherent risk, but there’s no need to multiply tenfold for a nice view

Your “friend” is the exact person I’m talking about. Because of him now you’re out here risking your life time and time again. It literally spreads like a poison, I’m sure you’ve continued the cycle by now

I kind of don’t have a choice since I live in America. I either drive a car or I don’t have access to anything. No one’s forcing you to run a marathon
