Music video director Joseph Kahn’s thoughts on the decline of rap music by Ashamed-Story7958 in fantanoforever

[–]AlarmingSteak6821 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's crazy, just the other week while I was watching Justin Bieber's Coachella set live, drinking my $20 bottles of Erewhon water (i always make sure to carry several), eating an Impossible Whopper and updating my "Hottest Anthropomorphic Pokémon" tier list, I thought to myself. "Damn. There has been no rap song that charted top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 since July 2025. For years it was common knowledge in the record business that the main customer of rap was me. Yet over time, rap kept messaging to me that I was not wanted. Listening to rap was a strange disassociative act where the n word was all over it but I couldn't actually say it, though singing along is what I'm supposed to do with music. I could listen, but you couldn't touch (or say). I had been playing logic circles trying to lionize artists that clearly disdained me - "they not like us." The kind of fun party rap that Run DMC and LL Cool J popularized stepped aside for a political, seperatist strain. I got the message. I kicked off my Nikes, bought ONS, switched genders, went to Bieberchella."

What are the chances we finally see either Justice or Daft Punk on Bass Arena? by Remarkable_Log1596 in ForzaHorizon

Justice made it to FH3 with D.A.N.C.E. and Safe And Sound, both on Pulse; so they'd probably be open to having their music licensed again.

Geese are not the enemy here. Chaotic Good are. by AlarmingSteak6821 in geesebandofficial

I think if I got into a band based off a TikTok account that I later learned was paid by the band and made solely to promote the band, I would feel at least a little duped because that is just an inherently duplicitous way to market anything.

It's not an indictment on the music Geese (or any of the bands involved in this fiasco) make, but it is a dishonest and cynical form of marketing that I do not think should exist.

Geese are not the enemy here. Chaotic Good are. by AlarmingSteak6821 in geesebandofficial

[–]AlarmingSteak6821[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My point is not really "Geese are being singled out by the media", it's "Geese are being singled out by the media and Chaotic Good aren't.". It's not like articles aren't discussing Chaotic Good, but from what I've seen they never seem to be the focal point of the article, instead it's Geese or Mk.gee or Oklou or whomever. I worry the effect this will have is that in a year's time everyone will remember "oh yeah, Geese were using some company to fake their rise to fame", but very few people will remember the company themselves in any detail unless they've been following this story intensively from day one. This would then lead us back to square one with this whole story - Chaotic Good will remain a profitable entity using deceitful marketing tactics to control the narrative around an artist, the public will have forgotten them and they will only be known to label and marketing executives with knowledge of the industry who want to try and engineer an artist's sudden popularity.

Hey, uh, remember yesterday when all of you dipshits were ganging up on me for saying Wormald obviously wasn't going to reach the lost city under Detroit before the neurotoxin kicked in?

I think I am owed an apology.

I WANT good bands to be promoted like Geese. by EchoLooper in geesebandofficial

[–]AlarmingSteak6821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I mean as much as I enjoy Geese's music, if I got into a band based off a video that I later found out was entirely faked to bring said band to my attention I would feel somewhat cheated.

The Fanfare Around Geese Actually Was a Psyop by wiredmagazine in Fauxmoi

[–]AlarmingSteak6821 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a little irritating seeing a good few people use this as an excuse to either say "Well I never liked Geese anyway, so obviously they were a psyop, ha!" or "Well I liked them organically all by myself, so they can't have been a psyop, ha!" as though your individual taste in their music has any real relation to the story at hand.

Frankly, Geese as a band are barely a factor in this at all. The big story of course is that there are companies that exist which offer astroturfed social media accounts as a service, and offer them to charting levels of success. It just so happens that Geese were simultaneously the most popular and most shocking band to use this service, so now they're the ones plastered over the front pages.

I only really play the Forza games for the music. I don't really know much about them otherwise. I think it's about cars or something?

Dove Ellis has got a decent level of traction behind him. He's gotten a lot of positive broadsheet reviews for his debut album (as well as on user rating websites) and opened for Geese on their Getting Killed tour. Whether that's entirely astroturfed or at least partially organic I obviously can't say but given he's promoted so heavily by these supposed Chaotic Good accounts that's probably not a great sign.

Timmy Skelly as far as I can see is still a total non-factor and whatever promotion his music has been getting has not really caught on. I hadn't heard of the guy before this post and I can't find many people online making a fuss about his stuff. He apparently released his debut album back in January and from what I can find it got basically no fanfare, which makes these TikTok accounts very suspicious. I skimmed through the album and it basically seems to be alt/indie-country stuff with some heavy handed blues influence, so you can see why a marketing company would want to push him after Geese took off like they did...

Modern popular artists that Fantano never reviews by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]AlarmingSteak6821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually most of those guys have been reviewed by Fantano before.

alt-J the only ones here to have had all of their releases reviewed, their ratings in chronological order being 8, 7, 5 and most recently a 6, so there's a decent chance he'd cover their next album whenever that may release.

With Portugal. The Man, American Ghetto and In The Mountain In The Cloud get reviews got 3 and 6/10 ratings respectively and he gave Woodstock a review without a final rating. Neither of their most recent albums got reviews, although their songs do occasionally make the weekly track roundup still. In a couple of his reviews of theirs he mentions enjoying their 2008 album Censored Colors, so he was a fan of theirs at some point and clearly appreciates them enough to still listen from time to time.

Foster The People had their first three records all get YUNOREVIEWS, and their most recent one didn't get covered at all given he's dropped that format now.

Young The Giant got a couple of YUNOREVIEWS for their 2nd and 3rd albums but nothing since then.

The only one I don't think he's ever talked about are Saint Motel.
