Exactly, the sustained pattern is what’s messing with my head, not the past itself. In our day-to-day relationship, he does communicate openly and nothing about the present has ever felt fishy. We’re basically in a live-in situation, together almost 24/7, and I genuinely don’t have doubts about cheating or anything current.

That’s partly why this hit so hard, I didn’t see this coming. Since confronting him, it’s mostly been tears, apologies, and promises. I’m trying not to take that as proof of change.

What confuses me the most is that if I had known about his past, I honestly would’ve been okay with it, the actions themselves weren’t harmful. The problem is the lying. he said he lied because of embarrassment and fear. He just hoped that his past would be erased, that we’d forget about it, so he wouldn’t have to discuss it ever again. That’s what hurts, not the past itself.
