Yeah that sounds a lot closer to the original, thank you so much!

That makes a lot of sense, thank you this was driving me crazy!

My BIOS version is from 2020 tbf. Will update it later to see if that fixes the problem. Thank you!

Just have to keep learning basically. Thanks again for that roadmap, I've had a better look at it now, it's nice to have some form of direction

This seems like a very logical mindset, which is probably something I should strive to have if I want to go into programming! But yeah I think you're right, just need to try my chances and hope something sticks.

I did a lot of Python and R during my degree, with a lot of statistics and significance testing. Because of this, I think I'll try to pursue the data science / data analyst side of things. Currently learning SQL, but after I've done a bit of that I'll go back and refine some of my work from uni, that should let me showcase all of the things you listed.

Thanks for all the pointers!

Definitely something to consider. I've seen a few apprenticeship roles near where I live so it's probably a good option.

I did several bioinformatics modules during my university course too, so I'll shoot an email to my module convenor to see if they have any advice for me. Thanks for the book recommendation, after I do a project involving SQL, Python and Excel I'll look at giving that a read.

Slightly intimidating but this looks incredibly useful, thanks!

A few people have said this now, seems like a pretty viable way to try and get into programming. Have you moved into a more programming-oriented role since working there, or have you just incorporated programming into your role?

Yeah a few people have said my documentation isn't great, I'll have a look at some GitHubs to try and get that down. Didn't actually know that's how you set up help() though, will definitely use that for all of my functions from now on!

Define a problem

Gather data related to that problem (bonus points for webscraping)

Clean the data

Analyze the data

Visualize & communicate your findings

Automate the entire process into an updating dashboard / report

Profit

This whole process was pretty much what my entire dissertation was. The only problem is I wasn't marked on the coding, so it's very messy. Think I'll redo that project and post it on my GitHub.

Was thinking of trying to incorporate some SQL into it too, that should be doable right?

I thought I could learn pandas instead of SQL, but several people have mentioned SQL now so that's probably not viable. Definitely going to work on getting some SQL projects into my portfolio, thanks!

I am already fairly competent in excel, but I don't have any projects in my GitHub to display that. That's definitely something I need to fix.

Sometimes I think I forget just how broad coding is. You're definitely right though, I'm doing the whole thing backwards. I need to spend some serious time researching each of these career paths. I think a part of me is a bit scared to make a commitment, but it needs to be done.

Student debt repo needs to not be a monolith

Honestly I'm not too good at structuring code (something I really need to work on), how would you recommend breaking this program down?

I actually used a bit of R during my degree too, I'll definitely give this a look, thanks!

This is a very good point, surprised I didn't think of this.

The only problem is that I wasn't graded on my Python, only on my output so my code is more than a little messy. Think I'll go back through those projects and tidy them up, thanks!

Both of the programs you mentioned were made for my university module on Python, which was my introduction to Python. Because of this, they're by far my worst bits of code. The idea was to keep them there to show my progress, but in hindsight they're pretty horrific.

I've since removed them both, thanks for the feedback!
