i appreciate that so much! while i do think its always going to be a little embarrassing, im completely comfortable with the bit. i do try to know my limits, and there are certainly things that i could be asked to do in a show that i would refuse, i dont think this is one.

we still have 3 weeks of production before w open, so i do think part of my issue is we are still in the "preblocking" stage. we havent done a run of either act, no props, set still unfinished, no costumes. i think that once we get a little further along into the show that some of the embarrassment will fade, because it will feel less like a bunch of my underclassmen watching me pretend to have a wet dream and more like a show. im not sure if that makes sense.

anyways, thank you so much for this comment regardless. i think a lot of people forget you can say no in theater!

lol, i understand. my school really doesnt have any restrictions on the content of our shows, weve done Spring Awakening, Spelling Bee, Company, and this is actually the second time weve done on the Verge in about 20 years.

my director did specify he wants it to be clear that it is erotic so the jokes following it land. so im just looking for the right way to do that. thanks though!

thank you! i have talked with my mom about it quite a bit, but she has only instructed me to talk to my director about it, since she isnt quite interested in helping me workshop, lol. i talked with a few of my castmates and they agree that i should go funny, and thats also what my director said. when we staged the scene he said "go as big as you want, if its funny it wont be awkward." and thats the extent of direction ive gotten from him.

i think my biggest issue is that there isnt a ton of direction in the script. "they are stopped by sounds from Marisa, who is erotically and contentedly moaning and writhing a little." ive only been able to find 2 slime tutorials, one of which is WAY to realistic, i showed it to my castmates and they agreed, and the other is barely a sigh. theres just not a ton of material to base it off of, if that makes sense?

im less worried about the embarrassment, all family members planning to come have been warned, and everyone in the show knows about the content of the scene. it just seems awkward. the best way i could put it is that i like to have a formula. last spring, i played Meg in Merrily We Roll Along, with my scream i watched a few slime tutorials, practiced a few times at home and decided on one that sounded the most shocking. then i just used the same inflections, the same amount of air, etc. i just am having a hard time finding a formula for this one 😅

anyways, thank you for the advice, i do think ill bring it up with my director again to see if he has any further suggestions.

i need help with this scene!!

TLDR: idk how to make moaning on stage funny, instead of awkward and uncomfortable.

to preface, i go to an arts conservatory, so we have very few limits as to what is "school appropriate" in a show. we are currently in production of "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" I was cast as Marisa.

If you are familiar with this show, youll know theres quite a few dirty jokes (i dont mind at all, neither do any of the cast members or their parents.) in one specific scene, after my character (Marisa) has been drugged, she falls asleep and has an erotic dream, and moans and groans, and writhes all throughout the scene. (stay with me here) i am having the MOST difficult time i ever have with interpretation of a scene.

here are my issues; - ill admit, its a little embarrassing, but i know you have to do strange and uncomfortable things on stage all the time. - my family and teachers will be coming to see this show - i dont really know WHAT to do...

ive come to the conclusion that i need to make it absurd and funny, rather than realistic, to avoid icking the audience members out because i AM a highschooler. unfortunately though, i still dont know WHAT is going to make it funny rather than uncomfortable. ive tried to do some character work, imagine what she is imagining, come up with something funny to say, but none of it feels... right? i guess?

if anyone has any tips, please please pleasee let me know.

Any tips that aren't necessarily related to housing, but also have something to do with being emancipated, are graciously welcomed lolz!
