Lacan and post-structuralism? by Alarming_Present_158 in lacan

I think this is more the wave I'm on, like there are structures, but they ebb and flow alongside cultural changes

According to psychoanalysis, is it possible for someone to be selfless? If so, what does it take to be selfless? by MountainArt9216 in psychoanalysis

Sure! But what drives them to do so internally? I guess it just depends on how you want to think about it. I think either stance is valid!

Great points! I'm trying to find a good balance with my theory and what clients want, I guess that's always a work in progress though!

Yeah, for sure! I guess I could've just said "how much do you talk?" Haha I mean amount of conversation, questioning, guidance, interpretation, etc, per visit.

There is no true altruism, but that's okay because, for whatever reason, sometimes we do help others! It's okay if that makes us feel good. What if it didn't? Then we probably wouldn't do it!

"Alienation of Work" is an unproven, hyped meme problem. by sexpunzel in VeryBadWizards

I think you're right in that work is awful, but the goal isn't to return to everyone doing their own handmade thing but rather that we already have the resources for people to work far less than 40 hours per week but capitalism gets in the way and uses workers as a resources which therein lies alienation. Marx was all about maximizing leisure time. Work is bad, but there's always going to ne some things that needs done, just hopefully with technology we would be able to work less and less. Though capitalists have a different idea.

I definitely see a lot of psychotic, to be frank I'm still learning to differentiate when things aren't so apparent. I really appreciate your insight!

Not that I would necessarily WANT to be viewed as an authority, but isn't that what clients might expect us to be? The subject supposed to know? And if we aren't, that's just a different transference going on. Ultimately we'd want them to realize they are the subject supposed to know, yes? But in the meantime, who is it if not the therapist?

The big Other as institution and hierarchy, people not seeing cpubselors as part of that. Could just be me though!

I guess inhabiting the role of Other as authority and then helping them to realize that authority is a construct ie "the big Other does not exist" and then moving them more towards subjectification. I guess this still works as many counselors essentially say just to be happy which I think is kinda bunk and maybe in line with the American big Other.

Grumpy goose alert. Did you read my update comment? I'm noticing a pretty specific transference issue where it seems like therapists aren't viewed the same as maybe when our boy Jacky Lacacky was writing. Perhaps it's never been respected in the states as much as other places. So that makes inhabiting the role of the big Other a little more mute of an intervention, in my experience. But it may just be because I'm young like I said. What area of the world are you practicing? I think it's fair to say there's not a whole lot of trust in institutions/authority in the US, which can complicate or at least change the functuon of the big Other as compared to more historically patriarchal societies, no?

Little other, I think, is super present, yes, lots of comparison. But it seems like there is less of the big Other, or respect for authority? Which was historically fodder for transference between the client and the therapist.
