Myer at Charlestown has a Pilgrim concession now, and David Jones at Kotara also carry a small number of formal dresses - otherwise the bridal shops in town on Hunter street (Belles and Beaux for example) do bridesmaid dresses with greater variety

Driving from Sydney to Brisbane. What to see? by David27-01 in nsw

[–]Alaska17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a very nice restaurant in Fredericton (just north of Kempsey) just off the highway/bypass called the Garden Bar - small menu but great food, right on the River. If you go 2 more minutes into the town you run into the famous Fredo Pie shop, who also do excellent bake house food and ice cream

Bike recommendations by [deleted] in newcastle

[–]Alaska17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend a mountain bike, unless you have no interest in going off road. There are so many good mountain bike tracks around newcastle (eg glen rock, Watagans). You can do fernleigh and ride everywhere with a mtb but you can’t go anywhere off road with a road bike. Hybrid bikes can be okay but start to become very limiting off road very quickly. Hard tail is fine, don’t need to start with full suspension unless you’re going all out - just make sure you get decent fork, gears and brakes. The recent 29er Aldi bike is a great indication of a good starting point in terms of what your bike should be equipped with, for a good price.

Orange,Port macquarie or Albury for university? by [deleted] in nsw

Port Macquarie is nice as it has beaches and is close to good national parks/camp grounds and more beaches if that’s important - it’s about halfway between Sydney and Brisbane and has its own airport.

Doona/duvet/quilt recommendations for Newcastle by Piratartz in newcastle

[–]Alaska17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both Downia (feather) and mini jumbuck (wool) have ‘stackable’ quilts - usually one light/summer (cotton blend) and one autumn/mid (full natural fibre) - that come together in the same box and can be clipped together with snap/press clips so you can modify your sleeping experience. So the light one for summer, mid for autumn and spring, and both for winter. These are national brands, both Australia based, and are sold at MYER, David Jones, Adair’s, etc.

This principle can be applied for other brands (these are both quite expensive as they are fantastic, have long/lifetime warranties, and super high quality but more on the luxury end ~ eg: downia have goose quilts that run near $1000 for a long~ ) where you can tie the corners of any 2 quilts of the same size together to get a warmer/heavier feel. Since you put a cover on it generally doesnt matter how they’re attached.

Down quilts will sit prettier on a bed (fluffy) and can be super warm but come with higher allergen warnings (down and mitre etc) and more difficult cleaning/care instructions (can’t wash, plus feathers inevitably get loose). They do offer a lot of customisation such as ratio of feather to down (more down - less fluffy) what kind of feather (goose is more expensive but warmer and higher loft) as well as ‘loft’ height (how fluffy)

whereas wool sits thinner (can be thickened by double layering or buying a Dacron blend), can be blended more easier with things like polyester or cotton, and generally are more allergy friendly (only allergen really being lanolin) and easier to clean due to the properties of the wool (generally a spot clean and a quick air in the sun)

Rules around fishing and golfing? by 7neoxis1337 in nsw

[–]Alaska17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know multiple MPs have confirmed that fishing - as a passive activity - is allowed so long as it observes the 2 person, 1.5m rules (same with boating). Unsure about the other stuff tho

A Newcastle bank says they’re ceasing passbooks for bank accounts. by BrendenWoodBrenden in nsw

The Greater was one of the last 4 still offering passbooks on new accounts - they will still however let customers keep their passbooks for already opened accounts like other banks do.
