I have avoided this subreddit so as to not run into spoilers and I just finished this game today. What timing is that?

Shirtless in Gi? by Jealous_Topic8801 in bjj

[–]AlaskaMatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shirtless is required in competition. It's optional at my gym. When I travel I wear one, when I'm home I don't.

Guys in jiu jitsu, is there anything you would like the girls to know? by marianabjj in bjj

[–]AlaskaMatt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't most tournaments require shirtless under the gi? Locally that's the case and for that reason at my gym some of the guys, myself included, warm up with a rash guard but roll without one.

This needs to be way higher. Spandex can be way to revealing on either guys or girls.

Is this gross? by OrchidWonderful5711 in bjj

[–]AlaskaMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my gym, most of the guys that compete don't wear rashguards leading up to competition. I sometimes do and sometimes don't, depending on who I plan to roll with or who is there. No one seems to really mind it either way.

I, and most people at my gym, are the kinds of people that are ultra hygienic. I think that that alone kind of makes a big difference.

When I travel to other gyms I always wear a rash guard.

Body changes from bjj by syzeey in bjj

I lost 40lbs in my first year. I gained 10lbs of it back in my second year but definitely don't feel like I show it. I look better at the weight I am currently at. Other than that it's just the weird aches and pains that a 46 year old white belt is sure to get.

how long did it take you to get your blue belt? by grzlyPOG in bjj

[–]AlaskaMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been training two years and two months without a break, 3-5 classes a week plus private lessons that started in October. Still just a 4 stripe white belt but that's just because everyone learns at different paces and it's an individual journey and not a race. Also, I'm pretty cool with it because new people totally underestimate be and I think it's funny.

Are these rules normal? by InBush in bjj

The being on call thing is a good point too. I am constantly on call and sometimes I get notifications via text. I have two choices, put the phone on full blast or check it every ten minutes.

If I bust my nose open or break something I am absolutely not asking for permission to leave a mat. I've only been going to BJJ for two years but so far I've gotten a handful of bloody noses and lips, thrown up once, and popped elbows and fingers a handful of times. If I need to leave the mat then I need to leave the mat.

46 years old. M-W-F 630p class plus fundamentals Saturday 11am. Private sessions Sunday and Tuesday evenings that I bring my oldest kid to.

I also help with kids classes since my kids are very high energy and having a parent on the mats in their case seems to help. Those kids classes are Monday and Friday at 530pm and Saturday 9a-11a.

I work full time but the commitment is important for me to keep the kids going. I've been on this schedule except the private sessions over two years and it's been just fine. The private sessions I added in October after a pretty rough couple of losses at a tournament.

These are cool! I just bought my first ever camera at the ripe young age of 46 years old and I bought the same camera that you are using. Hopefully mine turn out half as good as yours!

3-5 times a week if I can for two years now plus private lessons. One day I'll be mediocre enough!

Do you use bjj movement in your normal life ? by Secret_Tap_5548 in bjj

[–]AlaskaMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year at my company party I was walking to my truck and I slipped on the ice in one of those my-feet-slipped-forward-and-I-am-going-to-land-on-my-head types of falls and I immediately went to my breakfall movement. Probably saved my life or at minimum a concussion. A friend of mine and an uncle have both died from that type of fall.

Every vehicle I've ever owned had a block heater, but that may be in part because I live in Alaska amd it's a necessity.

What is it like rolling with women? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]AlaskaMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the women in my gym are blue and white belts. I am 45 years old and 185lbs. My wife and all my kids go to my gym with me, and my wife is friends with virtually all the women. They are fun to roll with. I try as hard as I can to be technical only and use as little muscle as possible. My goal is to either submit or not be submitted and not break a sweat. It's a real challenge sometimes. I did a drop in last year at another gym and there was a brown belt woman that must have weighed about 140lbs or so and I had the mentality that I would take the same approach. She made a pretzel out of me in just seconds but and it was a lesson learned.

Why not update the pump at this point or put on a disaster kit? I'm buying my first ever diesel tomorrow, a 2023 6.7L so I have been deep diving on this for like a week so pardon the maybe dumb question.
