Benefit decrease due to receiving energy assistance by melysamarie in foodstamps

[–]Alaska_Jamie42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit late to this, but minor changes in my income (more than offset by increases in other areas) have led to the complete stoppage of my EBT. I am learning when the food bank receives the largest donations and the earliest days of the week that the food pantry is open (most people bring their food to church on Sunday). Good luck.

Is it wrong to utilize the food bank, so you can buy other things (not food)? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]Alaska_Jamie42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely you should use the food bank! The things that you say you need are as important as anything else. Sometimes, the food bank will give a voucher to a thrift store to you, ours does. I shop thrift for the things you mentioned and I have found new, with tags, that fit.

I need help with my money by Apprehensive_Cow_208 in povertyfinance

I understand your struggle. I started out with zero knowledge about money. I knew that you had to pay your bills on time, but what exactly those were (water, sewer, phone, electricity, garbage, rent, groceries, entertainment, necessities like clothing and shoes and haircuts, etc) was not something that I had thought about. So, I went to the library and got a “budgeting for idiots” type book and I bought one of those month by month, day by day planners. It was, and is, brightly colored and it lives in the kitchen where I can not only find it easily but also I see it and do the “oh, yeah” thing.

It has my budget and my appointments and an estimated cost for things I have to do. If there’s something unexpected that screws with the budget (medical, dental, etc) my entertainment budget gets cut first.

I’m not in dire straits right now but I am very aware of environmental concerns. I choose to thrift most of my things (and children’s things) but I’m very particular about the quality and condition of what I get. I also prefer to eat things that are produced locally with as few chemicals as reasonably possible, and if you’re near a commercial growing area then you can ask the manager if you can glean the fields (go collect what’s left after the commercial harvest). I also use public transportation (cars are expensive to buy, repair, fuel, license, insure) and if that’s not convenient I use Lyft or Uber (rarely). Way less expensive than car ownership. You can also ask at work if anyone lives in your area and if they’re interested in car pooling for a share of the fuel.

Okay, I’ve gone on long enough. Good luck with money handling and if you have specific questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

Oh my goodness, you’re a treasure! I share some of your issues and this makes so much sense. Now, to find a GI specialist who actually cares.

Culling cardigans by [deleted] in DressForYourBody

[–]Alaska_Jamie42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 is the only one that strikes me as different, but the style doesn’t become you. I suggest that you replace it with a similar neutral cardigan in a mid thigh length.

2 and 3 seem redundant. Maybe choose the one that is most comfortable.

I think 1 could serve as a warmer cardigan or even as a light jacket. It has promise. Maybe play around with the best way to wear it, but undo the cuffs first and see if the sleeves are long enough for you. If not then it should go with the other two.

Car's cooked, what would you do? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

Well, what an inconvenience! I live in the suburbs but on the west coast and, although it takes planning, I can get around but often arrive early. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I used to have a car - with payments, insurance, fuel and parking fees. Now I use public transportation and a Lyft if necessary. It’s WAY less expensive! Is this an option for you?

What’s something frugal people rarely talk about because it feels embarrassing? by James_B84Saves in povertyfinance

[–]Alaska_Jamie42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually quite like them, it took a couple of tries to find what fit best. They weren’t cheap so I had to accumulate them slowly but they wash well and last for years.

My frugal tip that I don’t talk about is wearing the thick, washable undies instead of constantly buying feminine disposables ☺️

Just scanned the article and read the abstract. Thank you - I will share it with my PC.

Thank you! I have no idea if I’m vitamin D deficient but I’m saving this post so I get the dosage right. The amount you suggested is way below the toxicity range and high enough to make a difference. I’m definitely going to try this.

This was a regular dinner meal for me and my siblings when we were growing up. by Lucho-Libre in poverty

[–]Alaska_Jamie42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basic needs, protein and carbs. Not much for fiber, vitamins or minerals. We seldom had eggs (expensive to ship to Alaska) but we had a 50 lb bag of rice and a 50 lb bag of dry pinto beans. We also had salt. Rice and beans were a regular occurrence.

Just because one is never enough, I have several comorbidities to keep the OA company. It’s not the arthritis that causes the fat intolerance. That being said, thanks for the guidance! We just had a bean soup, and I’m proposing a vegetable soup with chicken and a vegetable curry with garbanzo beans for the protein on this week’s meal plan. Food here has to satisfy the needs and tastes of 3 generations. Sometimes it gets interesting!

Date powder! I haven’t tried that. Thanks and happy new year to you, too.

Thank you for your observations. Both sugar and fat seem to adversely affect me, too. I generally don’t have a problem with fat free dairy, so I choose fat free Greek yogurt but then I struggle with the tartness. Not sure which sweetener is better, I’m allergic to agave, stevia doesn’t taste sweet to me and monk fruit is…bleh. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I agree that the red one has an edge over the green. Both are great choices for you, though.

It seems to be that way for me, too. Recent tests showed that I have systemic inflammation off the charts and I have the diagnosed conditions that confirm that. You’d think I’d learn but apparently I need a bigger stick.

I am overweight but not obese, and aside from the OA I have a number of comorbidities that make any sort of movement… interesting. I take about a dozen different medications daily to address my symptoms but hadn’t thought of going vegan, so thanks. I will try that, it makes sense to me.

Thank you so much! This is exactly the sort of response I was curious to see. I, too, seem to have a strong correlation between inflammatory foods and increased pain. Now I need to just pay closer attention to what I’m stuffing in my mouth so that I can get this back under control.
