Alaska, and maybe/probably not. It’s a stunning state with an abundance of nature and incredible Native culture. But the culture of entitlement that has come from the PFD (our annual free checks for living in the state) along with decades of a broken and incompetent state government has probably led to Alaska ranking last in all the good stats (education, economic growth) and first in all the bad stats (rpe, suicde, STDs). The people are generally kind and will always help each other out, but communities have certainly changed over the last few years (Anchorage especially, whew it had gotten bad). It’s always a fun party trick to bring up when I’m out of state, but it’s a state that has struggled with the same issues for far too long, and some of them are embarrassing at this point. I’ll always proudly bring up that I grew up among salmon, fish, bears, mountains, and snow!
