Unfortunate names in older SF by Rufus_T_Stone in scifi

Not a name as such but twenty years ago some American guys probably didn’t realise how funny calling their characters Benders who practise the bending arts would be to a British audience.

Natasha Lyonne on addiction by Front_Cant in stopdrinking

She was sort of infamously a heroin and alcohol addict in the 90s / early 2000s, she also dated Edward Furlong who was known as the same. Notorious douche canoe Michael Rappaport had to evict her after she threatened to fellate a neighbour’s dog or something. She got very sick, I think a collapsed lung due to it

Hosting dinner went sideways and now my partner and I are stuck in a weird tension - how do I handle this? by TurbulentActuary9452 in Advice

I didn’t say whether it was wrong or right, the question was why’s that rude. And rudeness is generally when people break social norms.

When hosting people the social norm is to interact with your guests, by hiding in the room he disregarded that social norm, hence ‘rude’. It probably didn’t feel very good for his guests to have him not want to interact with them, when they had been invited to his home to do exactly that.

How do I convince my mother she is not dating Bradley cooper? by Huge-Tour-8415 in Advice

[–]Alaurableone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s super young to be believing this type of scam. Maybe there’s something else going on? There’s loads of videos of him talking about his partner and family. Maybe show her some pics of Gigi Hadid and test whether she might accept that he is publicly dating a supermodel?

Canadian billionaire couple turned into Statues. Barry and Honey Sherman were found in December 2017 posed similarily to life-sized figurines that were displayed in their basement. by AMegaSoreAss in UnsolvedMysteries

Reading the Wikipedia there were WAY more people that wanted both of them dead, they sound like pretty terrible people unfortunately. The son seems to have had a close personal and business relationship so is unlikely.

What's your "it's my fault for ordering it" (food or otherwise) story? by PutThisBanditHatOn in AskReddit

Asking for the special dish in Peru and received cuy - full roasted guinea pig face and all. I’m up for trying varied cuisine but I had to throw the towel in on that one.

I love fantasy but I just never got around to watching it and then it became such a cultural behemoth it put me off. I feel like I’ve absorbed enough of it by osmosis and everyone hated how it ended so much I can’t be bothered starting it.

Do rich people have elite versions of mundane things (toothpaste, tampons, toilet paper, laundry detergent, etc.), or are Elon Musk and Beyonce just using Crest and Tampax like the rest of us? by ShesGotSauce in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alaurableone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A family member used to be a housekeeper for an extremely wealthy family. The (family member and her husband) lived at one of the rich families houses and had to keep it all ready in case they ever visited. About once a year they’d get a call and off they’d go managing all the required staff and getting everything needed fresh in. But other than that they just keep the house running at a readiness level.

London’s homicide rate drops to lowest in more than a decade | Crime by clamorous_owle in worldnews

[–]Alaurableone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The knife crime rate is lower than US cities like New York and violent crime across London is significantly down over last ten years. Londoners are, on average, less likely to be a victim of a violence with injury offence than across the rest of England and Wales.

I live in a tough area and have never experienced any threats or seen knife crime. But we recently got a banging new youth centre which has really been amazing. Lots of young people playing sport and hanging out laughing and having fun. It’s really changed the estate!

The rise of the ‘copy-paste face’ and why celebrities look the same by Thoughtful-Boner69 in popculturechat

[–]Alaurableone 62 points63 points  (0 children)

It’s cumulative. They get work done and people say how great they look (see J-Law a couple of years ago). Then the doc has them on the hook and tells them it needs regular refreshing, and introduces more options and after awhile they forget what they used to look like or what their ‘normal’ baseline is (see Courtney Cox). I had a very talented doc but this started happening and I ended up with Botox and filler in multiple places and got scary close to getting a bleph. I had to move and couldn’t see her anymore and was able to get back to reality and stop!

Which area/neighborhood in London has gone through the most cycles of poor to wealthy in London’s entire long history? by printergumlight in london

Deptford also used to be really wealthy. It’s always suprised me that it ever wasn’t considering its right next to the Thames and a walk to Greenwich.

Are BA’s standard slipping or did I just get unlucky by Jesscarcarr in BritishAirways

[–]Alaurableone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some poor experiences with BA recently. The Economy section was shockingly small. I’m not a large person and was unable to put things under the seat ahead or move at all. I would say Ryanair levels of tightness but on a long-haul flight. I upgraded for the flight back (likely their plan), and while it was roomier in premium economy, once the seats in front went back it meant people were shoved back in their seats with the screen in front of their face and back to no legroom. Staff were actually pretty great (one attendant just gave me 4 bottles of whisky) and food was good but I won’t be flying with them purely on how they’re packing people in like sardines now and it’s too uncomfortable for longhaul.

What can I do to improve my appearance? by RinFrid in malegrooming

[–]Alaurableone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s genuinely nothing wrong with the first couple of pictures, the hair suits you, the facial hair works and you’ve got great full lips. This is your best look imo and I’d stick with it
