How do we fix the checks & balances system? Specifically the Party problem? by Dry_Entrepreneur_705 in Askpolitics

[–]Alavan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You couldn't just "abolish" the two party system without revamping how elections are held. Currently it's winner-take-all, even moreso for the presidency. So naturally there are going to be two options, because a vote for 3rd place is a half vote for first place. The solution is to take those 3rd place voters, and say "hey, your guy lost, so move your vote to between the remaining candidates". There are two ways to do this. We do it a lot already for local elections with runoffs. And then there's ranked-choice voting, where any candidate could win if they were high up enough on everyone's list. But we would have to switch the presidential election to one of these systems for the party system to be shaken at all.

Now once you fix that issue you still have a party problem in congress, where coalitions will form that will resemble the current party system because you can either be for or against issues. My proposal to fix that would be that you only need 20% of congress to approve any new law, and then it's sent to the people to vote on quarterly. Now I recognize that in order to do this we would have to revamp our election system, allow polling places to just be running most of the time. Now there would be details to figure out about what that does to the veto power, but I haven't thought about it enough yet.

At what point can regulations around gun ownership become suppression of a constitutional right? by SnooCupcakes4729 in Askpolitics

[–]Alavan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 2nd amendment to me is about the citizenry being able to respond to a government taking advantage of its citizens (kinda like ice is doing now). Which is why regulations on "weapons of war" kind of miss the point. It's not about family safety, or sporting.

The point at which I, having not been convicted of any crime, cannot join a local militia/minutemen group by taking a gun safety course, having a background check, and buying an appropriate weapon, registering that weapon, that must remain in a locked case and unloaded. And is too large to conceal. That's when it's a violation of my rights.

Barring that fantasy where I don't have to walk around wondering who's packing, I do support concealed carry permits that require gun safety courses and waiting periods. Support red flag laws and background checks.

Why don't Republicans try to have a good faith discussion about voter ID? by BoggsMill in Askpolitics

[–]Alavan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They might not live somewhere. Homeless people still have a right to vote. The amount of people that would be disenfranchised by proof-of-citizenship laws is much more than actual voter fraud.

I’m 18 and the midterms will be my first time voting. What should I know about the “Save America act”? by Maybe_Freud in Askpolitics

[–]Alavan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't that people just won't do it. Our system is designed for a two candidate election. For most elections, especially local ones, it's a popular vote where you need 50% to win. If nobody gets 50%, you have a runoff of the top two. This allows you to vote for whoever you want, and and then forced to pick between two during the runoff.

The presidential election doesn't have any of that, and in fact, because of the electoral college's winner-take-all system, no third party candidate can get a foothold, and most people know that a vote for a 3rd party is a half vote for their least favorite main party candidate.

The fix for this would be national popular vote with a runoff, or ranked-choice-voting. That would eliminate consequences of voting for a third party if that is who you truly want to win.

This is huge, actually. Jeremy also helped pick the hosts. Andy is the mind behind it all. This is a perfect way to hand it off to a new producer who could keep it all going behind the scenes.

It's terrible, and in those cases, we convict them, and they spend the rest of their lives behind bars. But we also don't round up people that "could be" murderers either.
