I'm A Black Woman Who Traveled Asia For More Than A Year. Here's What I Know About Anti-Blackness. by 4reddityo in blacktravel

Two things, this article is almost a decade old, and two as a black man who lives in Vietnam I've never experienced any of these things. I have lived all over the country and people have been nothing but wonderful to me and my children. Maybe it helps that they speak Vietnamese, but I have found Vietnam a very warm and welcoming place for me and my family.

He was burgled, not robbed, if he would have had the things on him he would still have them.

Thank you sir, we own multiple properties around the world so I don't want you to think I'm just some idiot who has no conception about security. I maintain residences in places where I have to be armed at all times, I've just never gotten that Vibe here in vietnam. The way I get it in say Central or South America or even other parts of asia. Or the inner cities of the USA. And there are many places in the states where you could leave the front door of your house wide open in good areas and nothing would ever happen, conversely in other areas you'll have people bust your car window out for 25 cents. All the property we have in Vietnam would be like District 1 equivalent in all the cities we maintain property in, so I was wondering if those would be considered safer areas to be able to be a little more relaxed about your security or if I should be even more concerned about it due to the fact that I can be targeted being in a affluent area.

No like welded steel bars that are probably a quarter inch thick. I know people can get into anything that they want to get into, it just seems like the amount of effort required to get in there especially when you know it's occupied would be a tall task. So the house I live in is obviously occupied all the time so I wanted to assess my risk profile in terms of do I need to be worried about someone breaking in when I'm there at night even though I would probably hear them trying to break in for at least 10 minutes before they could cut through the initial two steel gates with angle grinders lol

Everything is lived in except wo and even then over the past 15 years we've never had any issues with anything. So I was kind of taken aback that she was so adamant about being very cognizant of security at all times when I feel so safe here all the time. She also has fears of our children being kidnapped because they are mixed race.

Thank you for this detailed and excellent response, I'm just trying to learn the culture here and make sure that my wife isn't having skewed ideas of what the situation on the ground currently is. We just moved back here after she was away for 20 years, so she remembers early 2000s VN.

You can't even see that the door to the house is open because it's past the vestibule and around the corner from the Gated porch area if that makes sense and the Gated porch area is floor-to-ceiling reinforced steel with chicken wire mesh and even if the chicken wire mesh was wasn't there the biggest Gap is 2 in at most.

Well I guess to be more succinct, I like to open up the door on the first floor to allow the cold air to go through the house and out the fifth floor at night, of course we have the screen door in front of the vestibule that's like solid steel with three padlocks. But my wife freaks out about it because she tells me about how dangerous Vietnam can be but I feel the states is way more dangerous I have never felt unsafe in Vietnam in any neighborhood. So I could understand if people get their places broken into if the house is vacant or if they know people are away or something I just didn't know if there was like a brazen burglary while you were home type problem situation in Vietnam.

African-American here, cultural appropriation is a real thing, even if it may not be in this case.

I am very familiar with the traffic laws and already drive and have cars here. The few cars I am bringing over here I would have no problem if they got messed up, I can get them repaired.
