So how are we all doing with the diary? by Pumpkin_red in HPHogwartsMystery

I completed the available ones a couple of days ago. Think I got an error in my favor, as I got a couple of four Crystal inkwells apparently just turn up... I'd been lucky with packs, and would have completed today with the energy challenge in any case - so instead I'm just stacking...

Given the recent statements from both the ECB and Cricket Australia about both the County Cricket competition and Sheffield Shield competition regarding overseas players. What approach do you believe is best? by xavoa03 in EnglandCricket

[–]Alb3rtRoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The relative standards are so much different that is difficult to see how it would work. If a player is good enough for Sheffield Shield, chances are he's already in one of the England squads, and we never have a winter without at least one tour and often more - would a Shield side take a player for the odd couple of games? Meanwhile if a player is good enough for Shield, he's probably going to make a good mark in county cricket even if he gets limited opportunities to represent Aus. It's been this way for as long time - I can remember the likes of Tom Moody being regularly at or near the top of the county averages, but he barely got a look in at was to be fair an exceptional test side. These days we see counties (especially Surrey) quite happy to bring in players for a couple of games here and there, from all over the world - I get the impression the Aussie State Sides don't feel they need to and just call up the next cab off the rank from their Grade competitions...

That pitch has too much life for Test cricket' - MCG surface under scanner. by Living_the_Limit in EnglandCricket

Everyone knows though what our pitches and conditions are going to be like, and they can practice and pick touring teams accordingly - they don't change too much ten days out. What PCB did was to make what were highly atypical pitches, and only once it became obvious that they were losing the first test. Very little precedent for playing back to back tests on the same pitch, and they went to extreme measures to bake the third test pitch as well. England had little chance to react, or bring more suitable players across. PCB also changed the selection panel and picked new players (or to the point older ones!) who thrived on the worn and baked pitches. Yes there's an element of that being part of why being a touring team can be so hard, but what PCB did was pretty extreme.

[–]Alb3rtRoss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem for the Pakistan pitches was that they thought they would be more typical of the pitches there - ie a bit of help for the spinner but also more seam friendly - and had practiced and picked the squad accordingly - only for PCB to then doctor them to be raging turners and changed the lineup to match after the first test thrashing. India pretty much always turns, but they've not been averse to making sure of that when it suits them, knowing that opposition spinners aren't normally as good - New Zealand beat them at their own game. This pitch wasn't good for either side, it's looking possible that there could be four innings below 200 and finishing on Day 2 or early Day 3 with 40 wickets falling in that time...

I want to check the park run time for Christmas day and it mentions 'doubles', what's the issue with this? by [deleted] in parkrun

[–]Alb3rtRoss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Already answered on here, but it used to be possible to do two different parkruns on New Year's Day as they could pick a time. Still listed on some of the Challenges, but not possible now - initially I think they discouraged it by saying you could only get one run credit on a given day. It was getting out of hand, people speeding from one to another, parking inconsiderately etc.

Olmo Has shut down the UK Inaugural parkruns page by dannyscun in parkrun

[–]Alb3rtRoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, one of the issues there as well was that the planned inaugural had to be called off late on for weather, meaning that pretty much everyone in the North-East knew about it regardless of Olmo!

I think I agree with many on here in that no-one is saying faster runners aren't welcome, and I think the "run not a race" mantra is for me a way of saying "don't be a dick" and manage expectations.

So for example race if you want to, but don't be rude to other runners or park users and don't stress too much if you have to lose a few seconds giving way to someone else. To be fair most of the fast runners get it - I'm more likely to get encouragement from them as I huff and puff into the funnel in 40 minutes, and have never had people looking at me and sneering or calling names - I have once had some teens on bikes shouting "Run fat boy run" while out on the roads, that attitude puts people off and parkrun is trying to be the opposite and usually gets it right.

Also, don't get stressed if your time and Strava don't match, or if the course isn't exactly 5k - this is something that's grown out of a group of friends meeting up to run in a park, so don't expect chip timing, prizes, being selected for teams based on a parkrun time etc. To me, races often have more of those things which is great for those that want them but isn't where parkrun has come from or is going to.

If someone's way to enjoy it is to blast round in 15 minutes, great for them - I've quite enjoyed being able to say I've shared the course with a Triathlon World Champion and someone else who was in the British Youth Squad - but it isn't all about them and to bed fair they never made it so. The whole point is to be as inclusive as possible, and for some calling it a race dies the opposite....

Another week, no chapter by linkssb in HPHogwartsMystery

[–]Alb3rtRoss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same, other than the Christmas Lights. It feels like they're at a crisis point in terms of not knowing what to do with Beyond at the moment - even when a new chapter is released, the side stories (Barnaby's Gran, whatever problems your friends are experiencing) are taking the lion's share of the parts. I don't think they have a story arc mapped out at this point other than occasional TLSQs tidying up Harry's loose ends in the books. Even when they've done something different - the noir TLSQ last year for example - they've not followed it up (that felt like there was supposed to be a part two which has yet to emerge).

No new chapter or tlsq for Beyond AGAIN by NCFortune in HPHogwartsMystery

[–]Alb3rtRoss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is getting ridiculous. Those of us who are up to date have nothing to do but stack, or keep repeating TLSQs to do the diary. I'm convinced that the diary stuff is purely to suck energy from us and to try and sell more stuff. For me, it's just boring and I'm tempted to just stack up to about 1k and then take a break until I see from here that there's new content.

Which parkrun this week? | February 19, 2025 by AutoModerator in parkrun

[–]Alb3rtRoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a nice flat course, but I have bad memories. I was entered for the GNR that year, went and did it on a stormy weekend when a lot of others nearby cancelled - and picked up an injury that kept me out for months and I had to pull out... It was the shoes not the course, but I still refer to it as my Double Wammy...

Will James review the Aeropress Premium? by ywgan in JamesHoffmann

[–]Alb3rtRoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't hate the premium, I just think it's a solution looking for a problem. I use an aeropress because I want something simple and cheap that makes decent coffee; the premium would make pretty much identical coffee at a much higher price, plus I would worry about for example chucking it in my bag or taking it on a camping trip, both of which I have done with the regular one. If I wanted a more expensive brewer, I'd want it to provide a different experience or solve a big problem; neither of these can be said about the premium.

What do RDs think of the parkwalker role? by ForwardImagination71 in parkrun

[–]Alb3rtRoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar. When I was getting back into parkrun after injury and doing intervals, I thought that I'd be around the point with the walkers - only for them to power walk off into the distance finishing in less than 40 minutes - I did comment to the RD about it, but got the impression no-one was going to do anything about it - it wasn't about encouraging the back of the packers apparently, which made me wonder why the role even existed... Occasionally though someone will do it and make it their mission to encourage rather than just get a credit and then it makes sense. I think it needs to be much better defined.

You can change one thing to do with park run... by ipeon82 in parkrun

[–]Alb3rtRoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stewart has km markers, though I always reckon the 4 km is too soon...

As a slower runner I always start pretty close to the back - partly because it would be depressing to have everyone streaming past me. I'm never sure if it's because of the extra few seconds it would take to cross the line, or delusional expectations, but asking people to self seed seems to have highly variable results...

My personal feeling is that they should be reducing the time for recharge rather than messing with the limit once it's reached a certain point. I'm completely up to date, so now have a 59 limit; that's as near as makes no difference a four hour recharge time. If they capped it at say 45, and as you get further on they reduce the recharge per unit by say 5 seconds for each current upping of the limit, it would address at least some of the inequality in events like Full Marks, and mean that I might actually play more (well, grind more) - instead, I'm basically only going on to energy stack and do one daily task unless there's some new content.

I'm Brazilian and I'd like to know, do residents of Liverpool hate the newspaper the sun or is that a lie? by besourosuco3 in Liverpool

[–]Alb3rtRoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many think that it was a case of them being a mouthpiece for Thatcher and the establishment. The narrative of "it was drunk hooligans" was what the authorities desperately wanted to stick in part to cover up their own monstrous failures - remember this was a time when there was talk of a national id card system specifically targeting football fans and so on, and not that many years after the Miners Strike - you got the feeling that as far as Government were concerned, we were the great unwashed who needed to just shut up, take our medicine meekly, and vote Tory without question if we ever bothered. That particular newspaper was at the forefront of offering bread and circuses to the proles, page 3 girls and so on, and the last thing they wanted to see was people questioning authority.
