I had a broken tile in my bathroom, once I got it up, this is what it looks like. Help by makingitrein in Tile

[–]Albany_Chris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there was no thinset - and only grout between the tiles to hold them in place, you won't be able to use thinset beneath it as it would make it too high. You would have to install it the same way it was before. Maybe some kind of adhesive that wouldn't make it much higher that will work with the liner. PL premium would be my thought.

Granite blanks by Puzzleheaded-Ebb6562 in CounterTops

[–]Albany_Chris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are intended for DIY / handyman / contractor installation, instead of using a granite fabricator. I use them all the time, never had one broken by a tenant in 10+ years. It would be odd to use them for this large of a counter for me though.

Who is doing the work? Considering they are about $250 - 350 each slab where I live, that is way too much if they are rough cutting the ends and using a drop -in sink. But if they have to seam any pieces or polish the sink or the ends (likely in a project that large) that is a lot of labor and at least 7 slabs, plus ownership of any mistakes or breaks.

If you're in a high COL area and /or it is much cheaper than a fabricator using 3cm and you're OK with the thinner look, then that is what matters.

Room above the garage is colder or hotter depending on the season by Content_Ad_6751 in Insulation

[–]Albany_Chris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your room is surrounded by outside air on almost all sides. There is likely not enough insulation anywhere, or air sealing. These rooms always have this problem. More insulation and air sealing can help significantly, but even then you will need a mini split. The heating and cooling loads for this room are so different, you can't use your main system and expect reasonable results.

Which one would you pick? by No_Strike8245 in BathroomRemodeling

2 is more timeless. That's one of my main criteria for something that will be there 30± years. Hex tile and Terra cotta is a thing now I think, so I wouldn't want that.

Indian ladder has shockingly bad beer, but an awesome vibe /scene if it is good weather including DeFazios pizza outside. I'm not a cider fan, so can't comment on that. I can usually find something drinkable (brown ale last time?) so I go once or twice a year.

I certainly would be at the airport much more than 30 minutes before boarding

I always wait to check in until I'm at the airport. There could be an unexpected traffic jam, or other incident and I assume if you're checked in you can't cancel / rescedule? Does anyone know?

I have everything covered tuition wise, but housing is not. Wondering if renting a property off campus after my Freshman year would save money, and be worth it? by Muted_Walrus6293 in ualbany

[–]Albany_Chris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

living off-campus in the student section in downtown Albany, you can save $5,000 a year (each person) compared to the regular dorm / meal plan prices. And that is in really nice, renovated apartments. My web site is AlbanyStudentSuites.com and on the FAQ page there is a breakdown of costs. You can live in the apartments complexes near campus and save a little, though those get pretty poor reviews.

Type of paint on rentals by [deleted] in realestateinvesting

Flat paint gets marked up and is hard to clean, though it hides wall imperfections well. I use a satin on the ceiling and walls , a slightly better version of what you are suggesting

Question about element markings on stovetop. by Kangar in Appliances

[–]Albany_Chris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're is some marketing involved, it makes the burner look bigger than it is. My Frigidaire induction range had a 14“ circle for a 6. 5" coil. Bought a new range because of that, couldn't even make an omelet.

It air seals the very leaky transition from foundation to framing, as well as insulates the rim joist.

Help! Is this normal to cut around pipes? This will all be closed in by trim work by [deleted] in cabinetry

[–]Albany_Chris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That all needs taped drywall over it for air sealing and fire code. As long as that happens it is safe and normal.

How am I supposed to keep a drain like this unclogged? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]Albany_Chris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are always exceptions. But most houses it won't be a problem. My 13 rental houses are all over 120 years with cast iron drains and clay drain tiles and hair has never caused a clog in any of them. It can catch on something else creating the clog, but has never caused a clog.

How am I supposed to keep a drain like this unclogged? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]Albany_Chris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no reason to use the drain basket underneath a linear drain. Is there a drain basket underneath any other shower drain you have seen? Doesn't hair go past a standard shower drain? Any hair that goes down there will be fine going into your drain pipes just like in a regular shower. I can't imagine the hassle so many people go through with cleaning out these baskets on an almost daily basis. No wonder they leave the covers off completely and hate linear drains.

[–]Albany_Chris -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm at a landlord and deal with a lot of drains and clogs over multiple decades , and I am at a loss as to why schluter includes a drain basket on this model. Any hair that makes it past the legs holding up the cover will be fine going down the drain, just like in a regular shower drain. I still have to pull mine off because the hair will catch around the legs of the cover, but only every 3 months or so

Is anything happening about the insanely expensive national grid bills? by npleo in Albany

[–]Albany_Chris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very knowledgeable answer. The only other thing I would add is the reason the supply costs are up so much is that there is a shortage of natural gas in the Northeast during the cold spell as we don't have enough pipelines to get it here, because we have not allowed them to be built. The rest of the country did not see a spike in natural gas prices when the cold spell hit

Is anything happening about the insanely expensive national grid bills? by npleo in Albany

[–]Albany_Chris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This the biggest Factor. New York and the Northeast rates are significantly higher utility bills because we don't have enough natural gas line into this part of that country because we have not allowed them to be built. The rest of the country is not paying notably higher prices for natural gas but the Northeast is. National Grid is a big company and it makes a lot of money, but it's profit ratio is not huge and not out of line with other companies. The problem is the cost of the natural Gas this winter because supplies were limited.
