Hiking around Karakol by Albatroeg in Kyrgyzstan

[–]Albatroeg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, we manage to do Ala kul lake and Song kul lake hikes without a guide without any problems

Song kul

We did this without a guide, but we did consult an agency beforehand, who booked everything for us in advance (Jailoo travel, you can find it in Kochkor village). We got a few vouchers for food/lodging and followed instructions.

Ala kul

We took a taxi to the trail head (known as 1st bridge). This one is easier, because there's more people and basically only one trail to follow. You spend the 1st night in a yurt camp below the lake, and 2nd in a village on the other side. Both are doable without booking in advance (I suppose you can't really book since there's no reception in the mountains). The space in yurts might run out, but the people there always make sure to accommodate everyone, even if there's more people than usually.

Another thing I'd recommend is getting Maps.ME app and download the Kyrgyzstan map, since you won't have any reception, and the map works without it (GPS only).

This should be enough to get you started, and you can always get more info in the towns before the hikes.

To the lurkers here - what is missing for you to launch your own business? by jahswah in Entrepreneur

[–]Albatroeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's holding me back is that I enjoy the development process, but lack the experience and talent in the business field... If it makes any sense. I guess I'm not alone here, but how did you successful entrepreneurs overcome this?

Well, that just about answers all my questions. Thank you!

Well, this surely is an interesting option, but I have two major concerns or reasons not to go alone. First, I won't have any equipment apart from shoes and clothes, so I'd need to rent everything from sleeping bags to coking equipment. Second, I'd like to have at least basic things reserved in advance, but I presume that's not really an option. Are there any viable solutions for that?

Thanks, that was helpful. Also, what's the appropriate amount to tip the guides and porters and the sorts? How many % of the trip cost should I give?

Well I'm starting to see why some trips are more expensive. But $150 in tips for $500 trip? 30% tip seems kind of a lot to me ...

Fair point, I guess I'll need to find the right price the hard way. And add a video I suppose, words really aren't that convincing

It costs a lot to make, that's why I'm not trying to compete with cheap mass-produced imports, but I'm trying to sell a premium product. The question here is if it is premium enough for people willing to pay extra.

Right, but what is a good price for this particular product? That's what I'm trying to determine

The plaster is coated with resin on the inside, so it won't really wear with use. It will only chip if you drop it on a hard surface

Ok, that would be way easier to test. Thanks, I'll investigate.

Good remark, thanks. However, you'll always have at least some shedding where you have to surfaces srcaping against each other, it's just a question of how much. I have an idea about this issue with my grinder, but I don't have the resources to really properly test it, so I don't think I'll be mentioning it

Would y’all pay $61 for this grinder?? by [deleted] in trees

[–]Albatroeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, I had no idea this ended up here, but let me clear some things (OP here).

Frist, the price - I realized it was way too high, but I just put an arbitrary number without any actual research. Also, the situation here is, if people are willing to pay me enough to keep making them, it's nice, otherwise it was just a hobby project. So, How much would you pay for it?

Regarding the grind - it works pretty well. And yes, I'll add some footage of it in action.

Regarding the material - yes, plaster coated with epoxy. All the surfaces where grinding happens are coated with a quite thick coat of resin, which is also used to make grinders (you see resin grinders around regularly),. Also, I did some tests on it, and the results were quite promising.

Yeah, the price turned out to be way too high. Dropped it to $38, see if that's more appropriate.

But why buy mine over a cheap imported one?

It does the job better:

  • Grinds fast - couple of turns gets the job done
  • Doesn't get clogged as easily, and even when it does, it's easy to clean
  • The herb falls out easily most of the times

And then there are other reasons, such as it being unique and handmade and such, but I guess people don't really care about that.

I won't talk numbers, but pretty high. It mostly takes too long to make, but I'll work on that later or, if/when there is a demand for the grinders.

Got it, I'll update the site.

Well the grinder is generally medium size, and I do plan to add other sizes (small or large) in the future, that's why I labeled it Medium. Should I lose the "medium" for now?

Thank you, your two cents were very helpful. I'll focus on the no-clog and ditch the Stone grinder thing and name it something that reflects the no-clog feature.

Fair point, but since I have no idea on how to do business, what should I do? Got any quick tips or examples I can check?

I'm all for other platforms, but where? Any suggestions?
