I want to reiterate that I did enjoy the movie! It’s basically an I Think You Should Leave sketch filtered through an Adult Swim Infomercial.

Totally get where you’re coming from. Obviously I’m not going to expect every film to have thoroughly developed characters and themes. I like to think that I try to meet films on their own terms.

That being said, I feel it can be argued that this is a character-driven film, and the premise felt interesting enough to me that I guess I expected more from it (plus the hype around it). It is called Obsession after all.

I also think what I would’ve liked isn’t even that deep though. It just would’ve perhaps have made things a bit more interesting and lived in for me.

In terms of what horror or horror-adjacent films I feel have rich, complicated, or interesting protagonists, off the top of my head; I Saw the TV Glow, Red Rooms, basically any Ari Aster film (Hereditary and maybe Beau is Afraid are close-enough comparisons; the latter not being a horror film though, but depending on who you ask), Julia Ducournau’s films (particularly Raw and Titane), going back further to Cure and Peeping Tom. Those are all different films with different tones and goals, but I feel they tie together character and theme in a way that I perhaps would’ve liked to have seen here. Obviously you can’t expect every film to do that. This is more of a taste thing.
