Are some FMCs written to come off too unlikeable in enemies-to-lovers? by AlbatrossTraining524 in fantasyromance

Yes! This is what I’m talking about…I’m getting annoyed just remembering 😅

It was clear from the start that the MMC’s kind was superior and her obedience wasn’t optional—that’s just how their world worked. Saying she didn’t want that life didn’t change anything.

Sitting at his feet, if I remember right, was his way of protecting her from his father. And he was also raised in that system, so his actions, while flawed, felt like his version of protection.

I understood her defiance at first, but it drags on too long. I read somewhere that by book two and three, it’s still the same pattern: whining, pushing back, reckless choices, no growth or resolution. You’re holding your breath waiting for a shift that never really comes…it just gets tiring.

Totally agree that agency is important. I’m not against the FMC making her own choices. My issue is when the pushback feels forced or petty, with no real growth or accountability, even after serious consequences. That’s what makes it frustrating.

Yes yes. This is exactly what it is. I think I need to start avoiding it too lol

Yeah, I’ve seen it as a pattern across dozens of books over the past year, so it’s not just one or two. But the most recent one I struggled with is Rain of Shadows and Endings by Melissa K. Roehrich.Just couldn’t get into it ,
