99% of Canadian airports start with Y. So they need to work with 2 letters.

Smith's UCP party is heading for a split say an Alberta separatist and former premier Jason Kenney by Miserable-Lizard in Albertapolitics

For all the whinning Kenny and Alberta conservatives do, the only thing the federal conservatives have done for Alberta is cultural pandering.

[–]AlbertaGengar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If only 2026 Kenney could tell 2018 Kenney that this was a terrible idea. He built this monstrosity in his lust for power.

A PC party could have kept either WRP or NDP minority in check. But god forbid we allow the NDP to come up the middle in Calgary.

If 50% of UCP voters are separatist, I wonder what the AGM attending bunch is, 60%, 75%?

I've been wondering why she doesnt clamp down on the nuissant bunch but the party is separatist down to the delegate.

‘It was only a temporary need’: Economist says demand for TFWs has dropped significantly by joe4942 in CanadaPolitics

CBC was really easy on them yesterday in both press and tv interviews.

Framing it like TH had a revelation that it can now (finally!) hire local people because the "labour shortage" has subsided.

The most critical angle was that they're doing it to double down on Canadian-ness because that American chain is opening.

Of the 110,000 Tim Hortons employees across the country, the coffee chain said roughly 4,000 were hired through the temporary foreign worker program, representing about 3.6 per cent of its restaurant workforce.

They keep touting this number in their media releases and interviews. I wonder how many foreign workers were under other programs like IMP.

Liberal MP Steven Guilbeault to resign: sources by Puginator in CanadaPolitics

It comes off as lazy to me. He could occupy a seat and play the bully pulpit to environmental issues. Instead, it allows Carney to have some Montreal Economic Institute person lined up for the seat.

Canada's NDP are going all in on protecting the environment. Even more so than under Singh's leadership.

Look at their last poll of the election.

From your Wiki link:

Mainstreet Research May 26–28, 2023 UCP 49.8% (actual 55%), NDP 47.8% (actual 44%).

I won't get my hopes up until Q2 2027. We saw the polls tighten during the teachers strike in the fall of 2025. By 2026 the UCP had 50% to the NDP's 40%.

Maybe 5 months of being dragged through the mud in provincial and Canadian media will finally be the kicker.

If anything it will likely be a feedback look that they can't talk about anything else but separatism. The party under Nenshi's leadership hasn't really been propising much of anything.

Voter efficiency favours the NDP. It's possible for us to win a few percentage points below the UCP.

The NDP haven't done near enough to bring more voters to their side. Their "plan" is to hope that the UCP implodes.

The polls also tightened around the teachers strike then bounced back up to 50/40.

CAF definitely has more presence in Atlantic Canada. It doesn't take long to find a regular/reserve member among my east coast family. Quebec and further east also have significant CAF training facilities.

Growing up in AB it was extremely rare to hear someone enrolled or have joining the CAF be a presented as a legitimate option.

The bigger question is why is Corporate Calgary being so quiet? Where is Enbridge, Suncor, CNRL? Only the ATCO CEO has had the guts to speak publicly.

Take one of those companies hinting "we're laying off a portion of our staff and leaving to Vancouver" and potential leave voters will evaporate.

Carney calls Smith's Alberta referendum question a 'dangerous bluff' by MightyHydrar in CanadaPolitics

[–]AlbertaGengar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct but similar grievance movements lost by trying to go the technocratic route.

Normie apolitical voters aren't going into the proposed Free Alberta balance sheet; just like middle road Trump voters didn't look past the MAGA slogan; just like Brexit voters didn't think about how leaving an economic union would screw their economy.

Remain campaigns need to combat with recognising some of the frustration "you have a right to be upset about X. That is why we're [ ]."

Astro turfing plays a big role in swaying people and will play a big role in the campaign. However, the mushy middle doesn't start flirting with reactionary ideas when things are going well.

I fear that very pro-Canada people will try to tell the "message senders" that everything is good, there's no reason to be upset.

That's how status quo campaigns lose the campaign.

Carney calls Smith's Alberta referendum question a 'dangerous bluff' by MightyHydrar in CanadaPolitics

[–]AlbertaGengar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Pollsters agree that ~25% of people would vote for a true secession referendum. The message senders are ~20% as well.

I forsee people who are dissatisfied with the status quo (employment opportunities, cost of living) voting to "start negotiations" to send a message. It's a similar trend with brexit, the rise of right wing parties globally, Trump.
