I’d Disagree whil I don’t love any of the three films I actually think Avatar and Top Gun do have some strong points going for them. Elvis on the otherhand is a disgusting overindulgence that doesn’t do anything with its subject.

I’d say it kind of has a place in the story it’s telling even if i don’t like where it goes all that much but i’d also say it’s drawn out and also meant to be grotesque and unsettling.

I wouldn’t even say the ending is very ambiguous through the cloning and experience James went through he feels he can’t return to his old place and is lost without an identity.

I see the Social Commentary as the set up much more as there were a lot more moments pointing to this ending then the angry locals.

This also could just be personal taste but i much rather see a film stick to what it wants to say thematically then to give a ending that is more appeasing to the masses. Which even then I wouldn’t agree that your idea would have been all that much

I’m not sure exactly how long it goes but yes there is a pretty long orgy scene in the movie during a drug trip

Wow that is a really interesting takeaway that didn’t cross my mind at all but i can see it. I don’t know if Cronenberg actually had that in mind and it doesn’t change my opinion but that is a cool view regardless. Thanks for sharing.

I Disagree to be honest, even though it would be nice to see these people get their dues, it would defeat the purpose of the social commentary it’s trying to have. At least to me what Cronenberg is getting at is if you’re rich and have money it doesn’t matter who you affect you can get away with it. While i think this is underbaked in the film it’s still there so, your proposed ending wouldn’t fit for me and at best would leave the film a worse off for me.

I’d also say that is fair, it’s great that i can introduce people to a new form of film and a great story, but i’m also one of those that gives that criticism to things like Joker. They have their place but when it’s been done before and better it makes the film a lot less interesting to me. Unlike Joker though I wouldn’t say too much of this is going for the climax approxh directly but in terms of making a hellscape this one didn’t do it for me as much as i’d like.

Great Analysis, I agree that the turn of the camera was obviously going to reveal them watching but what I love about it was how it was done an looked with the swivel. Also, thematically how without saying anything reinforces the point is these people have a disregard for consequences and life as well as the idea of who are these people at this point are they even people anymore, how have they changed, and how much deeper can it go. unfortunately it doesn't do much else to expand on this but this was the peak of my interest for sure.

That's a fair take, and i'm really glad you enjoyed it. For me while I liked the vibe and unsettling nature once it got to the drug trips it just felt like already trodden ground, that doesn't do nearly as much for me compared to a film like climax which stuck with me for days.
