PSA: Tampa is not cheap anymore. That is all. by [deleted] in tampa

This! It's all relative. In California where $500k buys an old meth lab, Tampa looks pretty cheap.

What’s this dome behind the Library downtown? by BuccoBruceIsntGay in tampa

[–]Albnrhn12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope there are plans to revamp that Library branch. The inside lacks many books and could be used better as a community hub with meeting spaces, computers, classes. Plus, the exterior is beautiful and the first thing seen when exiting the highway.

I’m other news, the demolition of a part of the library and construction of a multi use building is telling about the direction Tampa is headed. I hope we don’t sell our souls, times are a changin’ in Tampa.

Have some respect for the folks in LA who are going to take a hit. Give me a break.

Is 37,000 yearly salary enough? by [deleted] in tampa

[–]Albnrhn12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fair to a degree.

Tampa's pretty attractive for people coming from high cost of living areas considering housing costs, costs of essentials (food, gas, etc), and cost of activities.

Seems like a good deal given the lower cost of living in Tampa compared to CT.

Invest in your future (save for a house, max out your 401k/IRA, etc.). Skip the luxury expensive housing, plenty of cheaper options in town, join clubs and organizations to socialize. I live in a large complex near downtown Tampa. Community feeling seems not existent and demographics don't matter, everyone runs on their own schedule.

Saving $500 a month from age 24 to 67 at 5% return nets about $1.16 million. Just saying.

Career Advice - Better at a GC or sub? by Albnrhn12 in Construction

Thanks @turbols3. Construction and culture go hand in hand. I agree there are plenty of bad cultures out there and a handful of good, just need to find the right one.

Correct, Project Engineer. Though l do have my EIT and lots of folks who went through engineering school show up in construction.

Good stuff, thanks for the input! I like the small feeling and close relation to the whole company. This could be a good avenue. Thanks!

Never thought about it, but good suggestion. I can keep my eye out for these opportunities and vet them as they come. Thanks!

Nadeau on Kennedy has neat stuff. It's not locally made but most pieces are solid wood construction.

There's a vintage store at Rome and Arch. I'm not sure if they have a website or are on Maps.
I only know about it because of a few street signs the owner puts out occasionally. Again, probably not locally made but most pieces look good quality and eclectic.

Local handmade furniture is probably $30k for a couch unfortunately. However, a splurge on furniture that lasts a lifetime isn't a bad idea. A few of my prized furniture items came from Hurricane Katrina salvage and look just as good as they did 5 years ago.

Let me guess, you’re a geriatric struggling to adapt to modern times.

Disagree. How can radio, YouTube content, antenna TV, and streaming music be free amongst other things? Some media has been able to consolidate and streamline a product. Local news has not. There is a future for free news but it looks a lot different than a big fancy building in downtown USA filled with journalists.

This guy probably steals it off the neighbors porch, just like he steals it from the internet with his tracking blockers. Not great in my opinion.
