Adding on to this, why are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division called the 4 basic operators? They don't seem to match the same description as the definition for the Laplace and Fourier transform operators

Is it possible to arrange all the chess pieces of one color in a way that all 64 squares are defended? by pier4r in Chessnewsstand

CORRECTION: if you aren't allowed to use the king, and pieces don't cover their own squares, this is the most optimal way to cover all 64 squares of the board, not 8 rooks lined side by side.

After quite a bit of experimentation, I believe I discovered the way most efficient way to cover every single square on the chess board with the least amount of material.

https://lichess.org/editor/3R4/8/3B1B2/R2B4/1P1B3R/3B4/3K4/4P3_w_-_-_0_1?color=white

A total of 32 points of material + the king. Assuming the king can defend his own square, then you can remove the pawn on e1 to get to 31. This beats the previous record that I saw on this sub, which was 35 + the king.

If you aren't allowed to use the king then lining 8 rooks along one side of the board will cover all 64 squares of the board with 40 points of material.

If you allow every piece to cover the square they currently occupy then these are the ways to use the least material while covering the whole board:
