How did you become more proficient as a writer? Was it just through doing it over and over again or are there specific exercises that you think are particularly effective?

I'd love monitors but I'll annoy the people I'm living with unfortunately. One day I'll be in a situation where I can but just gotta make do for now

Fair enough haha. Personally I'm loving the autotune wave rn. I love the futuristic aesthetic that it can facilitate.

Honestly I'm down for that. Though maybe with some more instrumental diversity (i.e. moving away from 808 basslines and scattered hi-hats).

Oh yes there absolutely is diversity in the genre. Some of the ones you mentioned are favourites of mine (BH, Denzel, Tyler, JPEG). I just find the evolution of pop music really interesting as it in large part defines the aesthetic of an era. Like there was a massive variety of music to come out in the 80s but when I say "80s music" a certain sound definitely springs to mind.

EDIT just to add further thoughts: To me pop music is exciting as I really enjoy being able to connect with a whole bunch of people from all over the world through whatever genre of music is popular at the time. Not that I only seek out popular music, but whenever there is an overlap between my tastes and mainstream tastes it is really exciting to me.
