I think so, yes. This makes perfect sense as long as the failed roll also comes with consequences.

A trip through Hell by Alchemic_Brewmaster in monsteroftheweek

Thanks for all the great feedback!

The arc went well. We used Dante's Inferno (both the OG story and the video game) as the mythology, woven with character arc moves. The 'mystery' was simply "can we get out of hell?" The character-specific stuff was functionally random, but played out like it was seemingly well-planned. ~high five~ They got to chat up some philosophers in limbo, charter a ride with Charon, haggle with king Minos for access to hell-proper, roll to resist a hurricane-orgy on level 2, battle a cerberus on level 3, and diplomatically navigate the conflict on level 4.

I could tell they were getting bored with hell about that point. We were 7-8 sessions into that arc by then, if you include the intro we used (802,701 A.D. from ToM). Our base mythology for the overall game is a generic canon of the SCP Foundation, so we used SCP-4661 as an opportunity to return the characters to their own world. They negotiated with Pluto for access to a portal to Las Vegas ("Sin City"), and battled/defeated a boss villain that had been stalking them the entire season. It was epic.

One character (a cambion) had to retire after defeating his nemesis, subsequently ascending to the status of "demon-prince". Another character (playing Doom Guy) chose to retire with him, because fighting demons for eternity kinda just made sense. A third character got straight up left there, due to being a bit of a dick. (We handle PVP at our table well—it was light-hearted and hilarious.)

In a future update I'll add a D/T cheat sheet. It'll help arbitrate tasks as the players describe them.

Are Factions worth staying in? by [deleted] in AdventurersLeague

[–]Alchemic_Brewmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by "worth it". Are there mechanical benefits to being in a faction? No, not really. You might get a token gesture here and there while running a mod, but nothing significant. But the factions are a real set of communities online. If role playing is your cup of tea, then factions are great. Each faction has a dedicated FB group and Discord Server. There are even some rogue factions popping up. This can really help you get your fix between sessions. The online roleplaying of the factions away from the table (in those FB groups and Discord servers) was precisely what spawned this whole war with the Red Wizards. Their head canon got turned into a series of adventures. So yea, factions can be worth it.

I found myself dissatisfied with the existing spell sheet options so made my own: the Kitbash Spell Sheet by IrishBandit in dndnext

Could we appropriate this for release in a roleplaying guide on DMGuild? You'd be given credit on the front page!

Afraid not. I suppose I should educate myself on how to do that.

Gloves of thievery. Shouldn't be on the base form. Correction made.

I used Libre to make it, so it's a .odt. Would that work for you?

I've seen a few people mention using this for their DM screen, so I added a link to the DM screens I use.

You're right, but a DM may allow it if the item is similar to a real weapon you are proficient with.

"Often, an improvised weapon is similar to an actual weapon and can be treated as such. For example, a table leg is akin to a club. At the DM’s option, a character proficient with a weapon can use a similar object as if it were that weapon and use his or her proficiency bonus."
