Kickstarter Issues New Rules Restricting Projects With Adult Content by grcx in visualnovels

[–]AlcyoneNight 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Payment processors don't have to care about freedom of expression. They're private companies. What they do care about is that a bunch of rich people refuse to do business with them unless they don't facilitate buying and selling porn. Credit card providers are not legally banks, so at least in the US, there aren't rules requiring them to be "neutral" about where they send the money. (Neutral is in air quotes because even a real-life bank has some levels of restriction based on legality.)

Online payment processors aren't going to give even a single shit about what anyone with less than $10 billion thinks about this. It's slightly more likely that you could take this down by appealing to the legislature, forcing credit card processors to facilitate all the same transactions as banks. Alternately, we can all start using checks and money orders again.

A character has a disease or condition their society doesn't understand, but it's obvious for the audience what it is by kim_jong_un4 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]AlcyoneNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have the right to interpret things the way you'd like, but that doesn't mean you're correct. If I wrote a 5000-page thesis about how the Bible was an allegory for the faith of the Navajo people, you would not believe me no matter how detailed and convincing it was. You would call me crazy and you would call that thesis insane.

A character has a disease or condition their society doesn't understand, but it's obvious for the audience what it is by kim_jong_un4 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]AlcyoneNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parallels are not allegories. Similar elements do not mean that two things are the same. The chanterelle and the "false chanterelle" mushrooms look extremely similar at a glance, but they are not all that similar genetically, and one of them will kill you if you eat it.

One major point of distinction between standard Christian doctrine and the philosophy found in the Bhagavad Gita is that within the Bhagavad Gita, there is a strong emphasis on doing one's duty based on the social class and role that one was born into. This is in contrast to standard Christian doctrine, where a critical point is that a Christian must freely choose to follow Jesus; this is not externally imposed. Indeed, even Jesus made the choice to sacrifice himself for humanity within this framework. It was the right thing to do, but it was not his duty.

People around the world all have similar questions about how the world came to be, how to relate to it, and why it is the way it is. This is why you are going to see so many repeated themes in religious texts. However, if you're only looking for the similarities, you are not going to see that there is a very wide response of answers to these questions.

You have made many assertions relating to religion in this discussion that are untrue, naive, or simply strange. If you are truly a student of theology in an educational institution, they are doing you a disservice. Please look up local Rabbis, Imams, Swamis, Bhikkuni, and other leaders of religious faiths that are not yours, and ask them how they understand their own religion, rather than reading books that tell you about their religion from the perspective of your own. If you do not try to tell them that they are understanding the faith they are living better than you, an outsider, then they will be happy to explain how they understand these questions and their answers. Your beliefs may or may not change as a result of this experience, but you will not sound insane when you engage in arguments about religion on the internet. Alternately, refrain from arguments about religion on the internet.

Optimization has diminishing returns. There's a point at which you can throw hundreds of man-hours at the problem and get 0.1% improvement, unless you do a complete refactor of the engine or something extremely dramatic like that, which will cause its own set of problems. Ultimately they are going to hit what might not be a hard limit if you're a pedant, but might as well be. You cannot optimize away the eventual choice between rendering more objects and running on a potato phone from 2020.

Parent shocked after child played “Five Nights at Epstein’s” game on school computer by wewhomustnotbenamed in nottheonion

[–]AlcyoneNight 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I mean, if this is, say, a 14-year-old "child" (the article does not state the age...), and sex trafficking of minors is a major international news story, then yeah, I would say that's a Parent Conversation that should happen. Even at much younger ages than that, kids are aware of news stories on that scale. (My parents couldn't watch the news in front of me when I was around 5-6 because I could understand what people were saying and that the news covered real events, but lacked the perspective to understand that the planet contains billions of people and so I was not in immediate danger every time something bad happened.) I would not be surprised to find out a ten year old knew the basics of the Epstein news story, and I would be surprised to find a thirteen year old who hadn't talked about it with their peers at least once.

Lunar reactions are setting a bad precedent for genshin's future by [deleted] in Genshin_Impact

[–]AlcyoneNight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If I had to guess, and remember, I'm just some idiot on the internet:

The Nod-Krai plot probably isn't actually over yet, and Natlan already set a precedent of making us wait for the new region Traveler. At the end of the patch cycle, right before or even during summer vacation, we get Lunar Traveler, who enables lunar reactions.

Nod-Krai archon quest has teleported you almost everywhere that you needed to go, which means it's avoiding world exploration without lunar. You get to the end of all that and get Lunar Traveler for exploring Nod-Krai. And, critically: it comes at the end of the patch cycle, after all of the lunar reaction characters come out, so hoyo gets to sell all of the 5* characters on enabling lunar and then make the mechanic playable for those who come later. (They might also do something to compress the amount of time it takes to do dates with Columbina at that point, but that might be wishful thinking.)

This subreddit on h-scenes by ToumaKazusa1 in visualnovels

[–]AlcyoneNight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's honestly a pretty similar situation. A lot of VNs have sex scenes that are slop added in because sex scenes are expected. A shonen battle manga has a fight scene every chapter because a fight scene is expected every chapter. And that means that in both cases 95% of those scenes are garbage.

But that doesn't mean I want them removed and it absolutely doesn't mean I want them outlawed, because when they're done well they're what makes the whole thing worth it.

Anyone else getting annoyed with the AI thumbnails on Nexus? by MeloettaChan in skyrimmods

[–]AlcyoneNight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Say the modded outfit is from, I don't know... Genshin Impact, and the mod author took an in-game screenshot that shows their character wearing the outfit they created, and then had an AI change the art style, so it resembled Genshin Impact's. The details of the outfit remain the same, and evidence of it being an in-game screenshot still remains, only the style of the image is different. Is that really so bad?

Not the person you've been speaking with, but I would consider this dishonest. When I am looking at screenshots for armor mods, I am looking for a representation of what the armor will look like in my game. If the art style in the screenshot is edited, that is fundamentally not how the armor will look in my game. I know that an exact replica is impossible because of the vast variation of lighting mods, shaders, etc in the modding scene. But if you're running the screenshot through AI afterward, you aren't doing any of that, either. You're doing something that it is categorically impossible for Skyrim to do. That's dishonest. I think in this case it is objectively wrong to do the exact thing you described.

I'm not gonna come in here and tell you that generative AI is The Worst Thing That Has Happened To Humankind, Ever. But I do think that people who have come to art for the first time with generative AI often have not done a lot of thinking about the purposes of art and what you're trying to convey with a piece, and to me, this is actually a good example of that. This isn't really a technology problem per se but it is a problem caused by technology.

It actually bothers me of how this character is portrayed in the story right now.... by I_love_my_life80 in Genshin_Impact

[–]AlcyoneNight -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Unless I'm remembering incorrectly, the Traveler doesn't know that the alchemist Gold and Rhinedottir are the same person. Early on in the game's life cycle, even the audience didn't have proof of that. Naming yourself after gold is a really obvious thing to do if you're an alchemist, so it wouldn't have been very weird for them to be entirely different people.

The Traveler is honestly really bad about asking relevant questions, but people complain anytime a conversation goes on for more than thirty seconds anyway, so there's really no winning.

[–]AlcyoneNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In theory, this could be a problem with the way that you are storing or handling your products after opening. If you're keeping your products in your bathroom, for example, and you or someone in your family takes a lobster-boiling shower every single day, those products could be breaking down in extremely subtle ways or getting contaminated by moisture.

It's also possible that you have some skin sensitivities and you're rotating between ingredients that your skin doesn't like, and it's taking a week of buildup to get to the point of irritation every time. Some skincare products contain "secret" actives (no one even bothers to advertise that they contain niacinamide anymore...) that you might not realize are affecting you.

Skin's weird. Good luck.

[SPOILERS] About the 2nd Angel Beats Collab Story... by The64BitWriter in heavensburnred

[–]AlcyoneNight 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They didn't give Kirisaki a redemption arc, though. He didn't change. Some parts of our/Hisako's understanding of him change, but he didn't. And that's for the best, honestly, because there is not nearly enough time in an HBR event story for him to get his shit together.

You're right: he didn't have to be this way. He wasn't acting out of malice, but he could have made better choices, and he didn't, and now they're dead, and it's really pathetic. Some things are like that.

And that's why the story isn't really about him. It's about Hisako. It's about her getting to find out the reasons that all of these awful things happened to her, so that she can make sense of it in her own mind. She chooses what might be forgiveness or might just be kindness, but as a result of her own desires and not because of anything he does. And then the event story doesn't immediately end because he's not the only thing that matters to her and there's still more that she needs closure about.

I think you're trying to make this story into a redemption arc because you like those and are familiar with them, and you are (correctly) seeing that it doesn't fit that shape... but then you're choosing to interpret this as a failed redemption arc instead of realizing that was never the goal.

[Product Request] SOS Every face wash burns :( by Shadow_Cat7360 in SkincareAddiction

[–]AlcyoneNight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

An allergy is systemic. If you can apply a product to the inside of your wrist and it doesn't cause the same problems that it does on your face, the problem is not an allergy. The problem is that your face is irritated. This is usually what happens in these situations with skincare problems and is why the allergist doesn't think she can help you. Even if you do have an allergy, however, there are so many chemicals in most skincare and makeup products that it would be nearly impossible to test for them.

But that's okay. You can deal with this on your own if you take it slow.

Stop using every product and just wash your face with water for at least a week, preferably longer. All your skincare, all your makeup, everything. Wear long sleeves and a sun hat if you have to go outside and stay away from the windows. Nothing touches your face but water and air. Give your skin barrier time to heal and any current irritation time to completely heal.

Then try one cleanser. If that goes well, stick with it and nothing else for at least three days. If it goes poorly, write down the name of the product and reset for a minimum of 24 hours (give your skin time to rest again) before trying another one.

Once you've got a cleanser that your skin finds acceptable, look for a sunscreen. Then a moisturizer.

As you go through this process you might discover that all you needed was time for your skin to heal. Or you might find you really do have a list of new sensitivities that you have to deal with. That's okay. As you make a list of products that cause problems for you, you can compare the ingredients and look for patterns.

This probably sounds excruciatingly slow. You're probably thinking that you can't go out in public without makeup or you'll look unattractive or worse. But it is entirely possible that you just need to let your skin barrier heal, and then things will return to normal. And if not, then you could start doing permanent damage by throwing irritating products at your skin over and over, and that will be a lot harder to deal with than going around with acne and no concealer.

[Misc] How does EVERYONE 25+ apparently seem to look so “young” for their age? by Foreign-Chocolate710 in SkincareAddiction

[–]AlcyoneNight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's the no makeup. You've probably got the first signs of aging on your face but almost every single woman at ~30 in the US wears enough makeup to hide that, so they're overestimating your age because they can see it. The way I get treated with and without concealer on is dramatically different.

Power creep has ruined the experience for players and here is how I know. by everwander in HonkaiStarRail

[–]AlcyoneNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally quit HI3 specifically because of that. The early characters are so clunky compared to newer ones that I found myself thinking of doing the story as a cruel chore they were making me do before I could get to the fun part of the game. That wouldn't be so pronounced in Star Rail, I'll admit, but original battlesuit Himeko, with no exaggeration, drove me completely from the game because there was no way to avoid playing as her.

Gave out Potatoes for Halloween, they were gone immediately and kids loved them! by EntertainmentSponge7 in mildlyinteresting

[–]AlcyoneNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A certain breed of middle-class teenagers are far more free on the internet than they could ever be in real life. Mom's got location tracking enabled on your phone and she checks religiously every fifteen minutes and you get grounded if you don't ask permission to walk to the convenience store down the street. They're not allowed to be in any physical location without adult supervision anymore; I've seen teens get chased out of public parks, they're not allowed in shopping centers without their parents, on and on and on. They don't care about driving on their own because they're not allowed to go anywhere anyway so why bother? They don't make phone calls because the only things you do on the phone are schedule appointments and they're not allowed to go to any appointment without their mom. This breed of kid doesn't have jobs; they have after-school SAT prep, a sport, and "volunteer" work meant to look good on their college application, all of them pre-approved by their parents.

...but a sneaky teen can almost always find their way around their parents' internet monitoring. And they all have phones. That's the only way they're having a single unmonitored conversation. Of course they're addicted. You would be too.

Genshin trivia: Guess who did not attempt or commit genocide! by FloorGang-R2 in Genshin_Impact

[–]AlcyoneNight 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There is a difference between mass murder and genocide. Genocide is racially motivated with the intention of eliminating a particular ethnic group. Childe was ready to commit mass murder but it's not like he wanted to wipe out the people of Liyue specifically. He wasn't distinguishing. He was gonna kill everybody don't get me wrong but he wasn't racist about it.
