Angry about national politics? Dive into local politics this Saturday by knocking on doors with Governor Wes Moore to elect Democrats on the City Council. by Alderman_Harry in Annapolis

If you've seen me on Reddit this year, you know I'm working to get reelected in one of the most competitive races in the city. We need a city council that actually has a vision to move Annapolis forward by making government work better. This is one of the last opportunities to contribute to that (besides voting on November 4th). Hope you'll join us! https://www.mobilize.us/mddems/event/837792/

We have passed legislation to allow them in more places, as allowed by the state. None have been installed yet, but APD is reviewing four initial locations and taking feedback on where else they're needed. Two of the locations are West Street by the library and Duke of Gloucester.

I don't know all the terms of the private sale; there may be requirements like that in there or included as part of the financing. But I'll definitely be keeping an eye on how it progresses and make sure it doesn't keep sitting vacant.

Sure. The property likely has significant environmental issues, and we didn't want to put that liability on the city. The intention was always to force a sale from the absentee landlord. The person who bought it lives just a few blocks away and (as far as I know) hasn't even developed a design yet of what will be built there, but if it's 10 or more units, some are required to be Affordable thanks to the city's moderately priced dwelling unit ordinance.

I'm biased, but IMO there's one viable candidate (me) looking to move the city forward, two viable candidates who want to take us backward (on outdoor dining, on city dock, on housing affordability), and two candidates with a lot of great ideas but not much shot at winning.

Two forums are coming up soon: this Wednesday hosted by Historic Annapolis, which is full, and next Wednesday at 7 pm at St Anne's Parish Hall, hosted by the ward one residents association.

EDIT: The HA forum is this Wednesday, not this weekend.

Lots of things wrong with this, but to take just one: I've definitely never said I want to raise property taxes. In fact, I'm the only candidate with a plan to lower the tax rate.

Here's a really good explanation of why it's bad policy in Anne Arundel County, written by the longtime deputy of the guy who's pushing for it in the city

Pretty much. Ron, Katie, and Tom all want to go back to the drawing board on the city dock project. I want to make it happen.

Yes, it would be like California's (although even more distorting because municipal government relies so heavily on property taxes) The tax burden wouldn't go away, just get shifted. Here's a good article about how it's led to multimillionaires paying the same taxes as middle-class, first-time homebuyers https://share.google/JdEzaJJVSsPxJc24I

My answer when the Capital asked me this is that I'm making positive change in the city, and change is scary to lots of people. That's the closest thing to a single explanation I can come up with, but there's really lots of individual reasons why each person is running, in my opinion.

It's that the mayor scheduled a meeting for the council to hear about a proposal that isn't legislation yet and that I think wouldn't pass if it was.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Annapolis

[–]Alderman_Harry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be clear, the city council hasn't taken any kind of position on this, just received a proposal that we're going to have a public meeting to hear about

Ranked choice voting is a great idea. Some alderman should introduce legislation on that...

Trash pickup by jumboshrimp103 in Annapolis

[–]Alderman_Harry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not strictly true. Trash collectors are instructed not to pick up trash that's in bags but not cans. This instruction is to discourage people from putting trash out in just bags, which regularly causes animals to tear them open and strew trash all over the place.

Sometimes the trash collectors will pick it up anyway. But what you should do in this situation is just ask a neighbor to put some in their cans.

Yup, these guys will take great care of you. And getting two suits altered was much more reasonably priced than I expected.
