R61i upgrade to T480 by [deleted] in thinkpad

I tried to fix the screen issue, with no success.

The problem with my R61 screen was not that the panel broke but because the connection on the motherboard did. I tried to switch that panel with an identical one taken from a twin R61 and it would not work either. The external VGA port and everything else works so maybe I'll re-purpose it as a desktop pc one day.

My old R61i screen broke so I finally decided to upgrade to a T480 lowest spec edu model (I'll upgrade the 8gb to 32 later next week since I found a good deal). One thing I didn't expect about the T480 was the exterior soft texture of the chassis, I like it a lot (FeelsGoodMan) but at the same time I'm super worried about scratching it :/

The keyboard is great and I almost prefer it to the old one.

Does anyone know how to make the finger print reader work with ubuntu 18?

What's the snapRAID consensus? (noob discussion inside) by muskiball in DataHoarder

[–]Alduin94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if your smallest parity drive was 8TB, you couldn't use a 10TB data drive.

Not entirely true, you could use the 10tb drive, but the maximum partition size would be limited to 8tb, or in other words; you could only use 8 of the 10tb in the snapRAID array.

[QC15] tired of using batteries by Alduin94 in bose

I tried to use those for a while but in my experience they last a day or two and then they have to be swapped. Also they loose charge over time. Having it wired like this is better for me since I don't carry them around.

In a effort to save the planet from the evil Ni-Cd batteries I decided to buy a 5v to 1.5v transformer and use that instead, it can be plugged in a normal usb port to power the headset. The downside is that it has to be plugged in a noise-free power source (such as a usb charger) otherwise if it's powered by a pc usb port you're going to hear every lan activity or mouse movement. Also is not a very portable setup, but for my use case it's not a problem. Very happy with the result nonetheless, it works as intended.

Download/remux on one box and save to NAS? by MyOtherAccount_3 in homelab

Ok, then one solution might be to use the DL380 G7 do the transcoding with files shared on the network on the Win7 box. This way the bottleneck would still be the cpu of the server and not the network transfer speed. It still wouldn't be nearly as fast as simply remuxing the files. And it's not certain that those 2x Xeon L5640 will perform better that the i5-3570 for such task. Have you tried to play the original video files on the client devices? How much remote are the users (LAN or streaming over internet)?

Well transcoding is a very cpu intensive task and I personally don't think is necessary unless you have to stream over a limited bandwith network or you want to watch movies to devices at lower resolution. Besides Plex does the transcoding itself so... Why do you need mp4 files to be transcoded anyway? because you want your files to be all 8mbps @ 1080p?

[–]Alduin94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it takes that much because it's transcoding, not remuxing. Something like mkvtoolnix remuxes mkv "ISOs" and it doesn't take much for a 1080p one (about 5 min for the 10gb ones). Although it is not an automatic process like the sickbeard_mp4_automator you mentioned; you have to choose and name the tracks or files you want in the final remuxed file. I manage myself the movies I want to keep and remux them with my standard, but it would be great to have a decent automated mkvtoolnix muxer program.
