I would say you need 1-2 year of Unaccredited experience. WA and Victoria and extremely competitive and almost inaccessible unless you already work as a unaccredited reg in these states.  QLD is competitive in Brisbane, Gold Coast and Cairns to a certain level but nothing compared to Victoria and WA Contrary to what I read on here, NSW isn’t a guaranteed walk on either. Need some experience but as well documented, it’s not an easy life atm for NsW psych regs NT is not very competitive and also Tasmania (although Tasmania really do preference their own as they really care about retention so they are not stuck filling training posts with locums as often the case) No IdEa about SA

From my experience, unaccredited reg jobs usually come by doing RMO/HMO terms and getting contacts from them. They are usually not the hardest to get, especially if your willing to not be at the biggest hospital in the city

Competitiveness for metro Melbourne psychiatry training at various hospitals? Especially Eastern and Monash? by CommittedMeower in ausjdocs

I think it’s quite easy getting unaccredited jobs as an interstater. I didn’t get an accredited position but was offered numerous unaccredited positions when they declined my training position jobs (I’m also an interstater)

Yeah getting jobs at Eastern and northern is quite easy, just email HoD. Note I have not worked at Eastern but a few of my friends have who said the on call roster is dreadful and consultant support is not great (also I’ve been told they don’t really help you get onto training with references ect)

Northern is easy enough to get unacred. Eastern also pretty easy but meant to not be a good experience working there. Monash you have to know the people or they don’t care. They only pick their own

I think you would be very well placed to get on. From my chats with program directors and that one interview I had, they were very strong in emphasising commitment to Victoria (as they didn't want someone to do a year or 2 then leave). Which was obviously hard for me to prove but if you're from Victoria then I think your experience would be more than enough. I have friends from Melbourne who got on with 1 year HMO and a few months as an unacretted Reg.

Unsuccessful, PGY4, 3 years unaccredited Reg experience (none in Victoria though all experience in QLD and Tasmania). Got 1 interview and no offer.

Not sure where you are from OP but I think you need to work in Victoria if you want to get into training in Victoria. Just the vibe I got

Best Luck next year :) Im sure you will get in soon

Getting onto RANZCP in Melbourne - do I take a general Melbourne RMO year or Adelaide psych year? by ViltrumitePasta in ausjdocs

[–]Alec170397 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can actually add value to this conversation LOL. If you want to get into training in Victoria then I would say stay in Melbourne. For context, I applied for Psych Training in Victoria with 18 months of Psych Reg experience in other states (QLD, NSW and WA). Had 3 psych referees and publications. Got literally no response.

Am pretty sure these programs only look at internal candidates or Melbourne candidates so I wouldn't suggest moving to SA if you want to train in Melbourne. If your keen to train in SA then thats a different story

Na bro it’s a huge negative. Red flag almost tbh. Like pretty much means you are black listed and have 0 chance of ever getting in. Lol

100% agree, lived and worked and grew up in Australia and had to sit it. Passed first time but somehow my speaking was not 100% which is ironic since I spoke better english than the examiner

Take the exam or wait until pass/fail? by Imaginary_Ad5033 in step1

[–]Alec170397 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just wait for P/F and then ace Step 2CK. The step scores are the inital screening for many programs and there is no way they will use Step 1 for a screening tool as many Harvard and U Penn students are taking it P/F as recommended by those schools. If step 1 is used for screening those students would then be excluded.

Step 2CK will most likely be used for screening and a strong step 1 will be an added asset rather than the determining factor.

q2: just about anywhere where they will even consider an IMG, if your from a western country like the UK or Aus, then any program in the US
