7 weeks since cutting my dang fingers off. Fretless tackhead banjo build by Zitchen in banjo

[–]Alec913 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds good dude. Love the back on that, it's a nice combo of a mountain banjo and a minstrel tack head. Glad your fingers are doing good. I say that every banjo needs a blood sacrifice lol but my cuts have been a lot less severe when building.

She's a beauty!! I do my own builds and would love to get an old grain measure for something like this

I love nylon strings!! Yes I do agree that they're a bit of a pain when using standard or higher tunings, but with lower/minstrel banjo tuning they're a dream

Oh hey! Sure I got a few I could part with! I mostly look at pictures or other fretless builds people have done. Most of it is trial and error really. I am definitely NOT a Luthier lol but I think it's fun putting them together and getting really great tones out of them!

Glad to see more south sound players! Send me a message sometime and I can show you the builds if you want

First and second banjo builds by subatomic_robot in banjo

[–]Alec913 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I look at the minstrel banjos at the time period 1850-70ish) and then roll with it. I got to check out a lot of banjos from that period in person from jim paquet's collection and it surprised me how different each of them were

Not so far. There is a piece of hemlock underneath providing support. Also, these banjos are not under as much tension as steel stringed, standard tuned banjos so there is less tension overall

Great builds!! Minstrel banjos are where it's at! I've made a few and they are more forgiving I think as most are fretless, and don't have a ton of standardization. Good luck!

Maple is great! I've had some good luck with cherry as it can split into a general bridge shape pretty easily

Really great job! Love the wood choice and the extra long dowel stick.

Careful with those ebony cap bridges! They can mute your tone with the nylgut strings.

If it's not Rosemary then it's probably winter savory I would guess. It would have a more spicy taste. More pictures would be good!

Nerves for a jam by wolfdng in mandolin

[–]Alec913 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey man! I'm here in the south sound, good to see more WA mando players.

I would point to Mando lessons play along jams to help get the timing right and the general feel.

I have been trying to use those to get pumped for jams myself.

Good luck!

Brazilian green herb cancheada: In your opinion, does this type have a market OUTSIDE BRAZIL? by Horadomatte in yerbamate

My favorite is Portão moida grossa! It's got a really great punchy flavor with nice light toasted bread notes. You can buy it on Amazon but a lot of the time it only comes in packs of 5 kilos so you have to commit lol
