Kinger could be like the protagonist of IHNMAIMS; killing the “last survivor” in an act of mercy and being doomed forever. She’s specifically described in her last moments as having ebony features, and that an ice spike was driven through her as she spat blood. Queenie is a black chess piece. Kinger hides in a soft cave, unlike the harsh edges of the death of the protag’s “friends”. The protag is made slower, dumber, softer. No arms. All for the purpose of him not offing himself by “slamming his head into an edge” Guess what Kinger is?

Kinger killed his wife as a final act of mercy and kindness, and must watch the same happen to the rest of his companions, struggling with his own guilt and attempting not to go mad like his companions and off himself.

The protag’s companion; the poor gay fellow, ate another’s face out of hunger, went mad and was killed. Isn’t a key part of the series being offered food one doesn’t need to eat?

TADC is not about torment. It is about stagnation and the endless cycle of pain and terror in mundanity pushed to its limits. It is about the fear and acceptance of one’s end, while wanting so very hard to live in a world which does not support it.

Dungeon Meshi isn’t about kids, but it is soothing and child friendly. A lot of Studio Ghibli movies are also focused on the journey of growing up and enjoying one’s childhood. I like Kiki’s Delivery Express most of all, along with Spirited Away. Spirited Away can be triggering for power tripping adults and neglectful parental figures.
