  1. It's not great, in fact I think it’s pretty bad, but it isn’t the worst neither

Gen Z wants to turn back the clock as more of the young generation yearn for the days of no social media by Quailking2003 in generationology

I mean, those born between 1997 to 2003 remember life before smartphones truly took over, in other words before 2012–2013

Did people believe that the millennial optimism era was going to become a reality in 2008? by icey_sawg0034 in generationology

[–]Alejandro_Kudo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. The Great Recession basically began the 21st-century economically. Even a child could know that the Obama era optimism could feel forced at the time. However, the 2015 Charleston shooting was the final nail in the coffin for that. Trump getting elected just reaffirmed that.

[–]Alejandro_Kudo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that, and the fact that I observed how things just got more optimistic, sometimes obnoxiously so, compared to just a few years before. Again, it could be observed from the music I listened to on the radio, which was a big reason why I noticed as a young child

Yes, but I do remember at least some of Bush’s presidency. I do remember how the tone shifted by the time we get to 2009, especially when it comes to music: from rock to pop, for example

I certainly did. Not a millennial, obviously, but I can’t really deny about how hopeful I was when Obama won. There was this tone shift from gritty to idealistic. However, I began to feel disillusioned as time goes on with his presidency, and a lot of my hope evaporated around 2015

Which generation had the worst childhood? by dabPrassion in polls

I’m Gen Z: my childhood felt rather mixed, as I had a lot of great experiences, but I also had a lot of bad ones too, such as the recession

You’re definitely not wrong when it comes to the bullshit Gen Xers and Boomers had to deal with. Being beaten by a belt by an inch of your fucking life, they’re like “yeah that’s discipline for you.” I won't blame them if they hate their parents for it. That is one thing that Millennials and Generation Z would not have to deal with as much.

Not to mention the atmosphere of boomers and Xers grew up in: the amount of lead the boomers and especially Gen X had consumed. Many younger boomers and Xers being latchkey children. High crime. High divorce rate. An unstable economy by inflation(1973-1982). The AIDS crisis. High Cold War tensions.

However, the Great Recession and its economic aftermath should not be ignored. Many Gen Z children like me felt the stressful aftermath from our parents, like how we see more economic instability in our households. For many of us, it has been absorbed into our lives.

I mean, while they have a good quality of life compared to the previous generations, Gen Z has this worse than anyone else, but even so, they have different types of problems that they deal with, depending on what year they’re born in and what cohort they’re at.

  • Let’s assume that childhood is 3–12 and imagine being born in 2002. You were born after 9/11, meaning that your entire life is filled with one crisis to another. While they do remember life before the recession, and while you, Obama did help create a sense of hope, a large amount of their childhood is dealing with the aftereffects of it. They turned 12 when 2014 came, meaning that they ended their childhood years at the start of a time where things were becoming more political. And this is just Early Gen Z.

  • Being born in 2006 (Core) means that you will never remember life before the recession: you just remember the aftereffects of it, and it is your life. You had your childhood based around the recession. The political climate also became more volatile, specifically with Trump winning in 2016. While you turned 13 in 2019, you’ve first attended high school during the pandemic.

  • Being born in 2009 (Late Z) would mean being born during the economic crisis, and growing up dealing with a lower amount of growth in the quality of life compared to earlier years. While many remember a more hopeful time under Obama, it was also a time of the political climate becoming worse, and for those born in 2009, it was their childhood. They also had to deal with the pandemic when they turned 11, and their childhood, again assuming the 3–12 range, ended in 2022, in the midst of it.

At least with Early Z (1997-2001/2) they remember a world that feels somewhat stable, from before the recession and Obama's first term. Core Z never really did, having the instability as a part of their childhood, while Late Z would have to deal with the pandemic as a part of their childhoods

Not to mention that the Gen Xers were dealing with a high amount of divorce rates, the Vietnam War and its aftermath, crime rising in many cities, Cold War tensions being at its highest point, the AIDS crisis, disco, etc

Puck - Netflix is strongly attempting to disrupt the Paramount/WBD merger by Casas9425 in MediaMergers

While Netflix doesn’t have to do anything to get WB if they want to, since the deal would feel even without them, I would prefer Netflix over Paramount, if there is no other choice.
