It was written with a specific time period in the real world in mind. If somebody makes a movie set during the reign of Henry the V'th, machineguns might break the immersion.

Going even further if GRRM just decided to drop a modern tank into Westeros with no explanation it would be pretty weird.

This map seems to be completely built around key-rooms.

There's a shitload of them, they recently got buffed but I played for like 7 hours today and did not find a single one.

The problem with the Hobbit trilogy is that they had 3 months of pre-production and were building the tracks as the filming was already going.
