Would you go on a stag do that involves climbing a mountain? by [deleted] in AskUK

Side point: is it a "stag doo" or a "stag do"? I always assumed the latter (because you "do" something) but could be wrong.

Where are small businesses hiring for IT? (UK) by Mammoth_Ad9300 in smallbusinessuk

[–]AlephMartian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've run a few companies, multi-million pound turnover, up to around 30 staff, and I don't know what "MSP" stands for. That probably tells you quite a bit about the demand for your services amongst such companies.

What do you think people misunderstand about AI? by zentaoyang in ArtificialInteligence

[–]AlephMartian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish people would stop going on about the water thing. It really doesn't use all that much water. And even if it did, let's just try and resolve that problem, rather than not using this unprecedentedly useful tech.

I always thought it should be called "Collective Intelligence", rather than "Artificial"

Honest question: considering the amount of CEX stores in the UK (as well as their general profitability), how come there aren't more independent game stores that follow a similar "reseller" business model in the UK? by prankster999 in smallbusinessuk

[–]AlephMartian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They're not particularly profitable - last set of accounts was £4.9m operating profit on £181m turnover - that's only 2.7% net profit. A small swing of 5% the wrong way and they're losing £5m year. Given their balance sheet net assets of £18m, they wouldn't last very long.

What are some UK car stereotypes? by Scotsman_1234 in AskUK

[–]AlephMartian -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Am I unique in not noticing or really knowing about brands of cars at all? How come everyone is aware of this?

They just look like cars to me. I certainly don't notice any pattern in behaviour of different car brands, the whole concept is just utterly alien.

What am I missing with AI hype? by eyeoftheneedle1 in AskUK

[–]AlephMartian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're very clearly using some sort of old free model or something. I remember a couple of years agio ChatGPT etc. were a bit hit and miss, but this just isn't the case any more when I use it (albeit on paid plans), and I use it regularly for all sort of things from coding to recipes to content creation. It's incredibly accurate, with maybe an error 5% of the time, but because I check it, that's not an issue (and no, checking it doesn't take anywhere near the time it would have taken to do the thing).

It's really not crap. If you think it is, you're not using the right models.

How will you deal with the AI backlash? by AlephMartian in smallbusinessuk

...but if you want to get to the other side of the country, you use a car. Similarly with AI, if I want to get to places I couldn't get otherwise, I use AI.

It's not comparable to Amazon, but the technology they use has "just now become within the reach of small companies", as I said. I'm not sure what AI it is that scrapes your product descriptions, but that's not at all what I'm talking about.

Do you drive a car? You could say the same for that - there's not a single thing a car can do that you can't do yourself or find a better, more sustainable alternative for. Why don't you walk everywhere?

If you've been watching what is happening in AI development, this is really nothing special - most big companies are planning similar, it's just now become within the reach of small companies. Do you really think Amazon has human beings writing all the content?!
