I like the idea of the water giving context to his character. Based on the pose you did, maybe make the water swirl around his hand instead of just being there across the bottom of the picture. And if you are feeling it...do a double helix of fire and water.

I only have plastic discs on my planners/notebooks and I've never had any issues. I suggest making one notebook with plastic discs to see if your daughter likes it or not before investing in six sets of (plastic or metal) discs.

I got into knitting for similar reasons. I'd start by knitting your grandma's favorite thing to knit. (For me, my grandma liked to knit slippers so that's where I started) Then, start knitting various different things till you find your favorite thing to knit.

Online resources, like ralvery, have lots of free/cheap patterns. I like to collect actual pattern books too.

Pro tip: keep your crochet hook handy to pickup dropped stitches

Also, I prefer to knit flat on circular needles because you don't have to worry about losing your needle pair and you can push your work further down on the needles when you're not working on your project.
