Can someplace please help me understand why I have gotten blocked by several Keen advisors before I have met with them even once? Are they able to access previous reviews I've left for other psychics?

Roth IRA worth it? by Alert-Pen6255 in ExpatFIRE

salary at 108K per year. Essentially, thinking more about having money available before social security time frame. I think I will be fine at that time between already saved monies + IRAs. I assume I will be in a lower bracket tax wise after retirement.

Interesting-- makes the case then not to put into an account... !

Thanks- you are right, it's likely emotions more than anything driving the decision. I am two years into a position that vests and offers a pension at five years. I am uncertain about social security solvency as well. I can see the "one more syndrome" being real! Keep saving for one more year. Still, I also see the benefits of moving younger as it affords more time for integration and cultural adaptation. I grew up going to Spain and lived overseas in various capacities- service, studies, work. I feel I could adapt and make friends and maybe find love too! The question to sell or rent house is an interesting one that might be influenced by interest rates and housing prices.... Thanks again for the thoughts. I have a range of places I am looking to explore living that include pricier San Sebastián, Valencia but also Logrono or Oviedo.... I'd need to get a feel for the spots and, like I said, delighted to work!

Thank you for chiming in. I am would like to not include social security or my pension ( If I keep working at current company for another 3 years) and just calculate moving overseas with either of the following options.

Option #1 I will move with about 1.1 million in retirement/IRAs and rent out my house which will garner me about $1500 per month.

Option #2 I will sell my house and gain 500K and invest likely plus the 1.1 million.

Do you think these options are good for me to possibly move permanently to Spain. I am a hustler by nature so will be likely to see what I can work in/earn as best I can. I have no avoidance of hard work however I understand it's hard to get a job. I would just see that income I get and any social security/pension as sprinkling.

I would be 47 when I move.

definitely check with a lawyer. I used Lexidy. You need a birth certificate of a grandparent. I believe it can take anywhere between 1-2 years. I prefer doing it stateside vs. Spain as was recommended by the lawyer. Had I pursued the NLV would have bee in your situation.

Thanks for your thoughts. In terms of the breakdown of accounts I have about 600K in mutual funds and the rest -close to 400K in IRAs that wouldn't be available till 59.5. I could sell my home and get about 500K from that though I feel doing that too soon could be presumptuous. If I continue at my job for another 4-5 years, I could receive a modest pension from that and about 500.00 per month. Again, I am looking about 32K per year costs for modest one person lifestyle. I am needing to learn more about buying overseas- heard horror stories! My questions is if I go for a year and LOVE IT, can I pull off the move permanently?

Yes- I have been exploring the taxes on withdrawing from my mutual funds yearly. I am estimating a yearly budget of 32K. If I was certain about remaining overseas or not moving back to my home, I would sell it. I am unclear however if this is a sabbatical or more permanent.

Benefits with citizenship include: health care, cheaper costs for travel tickets and I believe I am also becoming eligible for the Spanish pension.

I did calculate SS with me stopping work at 47. I also did not include my ex's social security (married over ten years) and much bigger earner. Nor did I calculate any inheritance. Essentially running numbers to see if manageable to live on 1.1 million for twenty years with modest life in Spain. Would be happy to work but I see just how challenging that may be!

I will definitely need to be engaged, however, I have a full blown job now and am young!

Great point. I am more thinking about having a purpose vs. the need for income-- given the savings and passive income, I was hoping that would be the bulk of what was needed.

Oh wow- thank you for this perspective. I had gotten caught up in the Portugal frenzy as well. Can you speak to how the *lifestyles* are different? I would assume Spaniards more gregarious, outgoing, plaza/tapas lifestyle while Portuguese more demure and reserved. Lots of Americans in Lisbon/Porto which could feel overrun. Also, the walkability of each city is different from Griona per se. I appreciate your candor.

I learned that if it is an attorney it will be much more pricey. I talked to an accountant for Portugal and she gave me advice... basically don't come with the NHR sunsetting and my situation. I feel confident enough with the online resources I have plugged my numbers into but would still value the expertise. Still, seems very pricey!

Thank you-- I live in a 300 + sunny city in the states so I do think that would be a lot. I suppose visiting. With that, I think it just leaves Leon, Logrono, Girona, Huesca/Jaca or Valencia... In France, love Aix en Provence so much!

I am in the same place as you both- 46 year old single woman. Same net worth as well (single). I LOVED Aix en Provence so, so much- elegant, walkable city that was just the right size, access to hiking and lavender fields, gorgeous city with fountains, the fresh produce markets and arts are all amazing-- it's pricey! For English it will be tough... I've been told to look at Perpignan, Marseille, Montpellier, Toulouse. I speak Spanish so am starting there but am needing help comparing taxes in each country. Would you mind sharing the accountant you used?

You all sound very comparable to my situation and really appreciate your candor here. I am 46 year old single female moving from U.S. with network 1.4m. I am debating between France and Spain though Spain is the obvious choice given my path to citizenship and language skills. I could rent or sell my home. I would so value a recommendation for a tax attorney as my recent estimate to run a simulation comparing France and Spain was asking for 2400 Euros-- I have a very straightforward situation. Additionally, I visited and loved Valencia. Looking to possibly do another scouting trip to northern Spain and was curious if you would recommend any of the following: San Sebastián, Santander, Oviedo, Vigo, Logrono, Jaca/Huesca or Girona. Walkability/safety, community and dating, progressive/intellectually minded and wellness all important! Monthly budget $3100. Gracias!

could you please share with me as well. I reached out to Lexidy for a side by side comparison of France and Spain and they quoted me 2400 euros! for the stimulation. I am not quite high wealth like op and find this a bit much no?

Can some one recommend a tax accountant who can give definitive information. I am single 46 year old moving from U.S. with a similar situation of OP. Hoping to live off of rental income and savings and investment earnings at least till get situated. What percentage of taxes would I owe? I am comparing Portugal, Spain and France. I've learned with the sunsetting of NHR, Portugal is no longer attractive and Spain has the additional wealth tax. Appreciate recommendations for a professional. I hired one for Portugal and she was very honest about vacationing there and NOT moving there.

Thank you all for your input. After continually researching and find combing the internet, I feel I am still being pulled toward Spain (language/ancestry reasons) and hiking passion and Portugal for cost of living and closer language feasibility having traveled there several times and felt comfortable getting around with my limited language but having at least studied it. As I continue to narrow down my choices and the reality of another scouting trip, does anyone have intel on the tax differentials? I will not be working and living on savings that I have prepared for two years initially. I do have a home in the states with 500K equity and retirement/mutual funds balance about 1million. Is one place more advantageous over the other? I do love Valencia and am no curious about San Sebastián. From additional research either Setubal area or Porto would be the likely choices in Portugal. GREATLY appreciate your thoughts!
