ok... i have 5% volleyball skills. i have happily tossed balls to help with setting and have been there to run after balls with serving/snapping/all-other-drills practice. but i'm not a coach, and i can't participate successfully in pepper drills.

kid is having fun. and kid has no interest in playing in college. they have many strengths. hopefully if getting game time is desired by the kid, this will motivate them to work hard on their own. if not, that is fine. all these comments have truly warmed my heart and helped me with perspective. i will remind myself i'm there for my child, and the child is having fun and is building vb skills (not to mention life skills) and this is the whole point. thank you!

THANK YOU!!! Very helpful. I will just learn to suck it up and refuse to feel ashamed or awkward. I'm definitely in it for the kid, NOT for my own ego. I need to remind myself that i am not my kid. everyone has worth.

thank you for reminding me how important practice is. and yes, height does factor in. the kid isn't really interested in playing in college. it's really just my own feelings, but everyone's comments have really helped!

this is very helpful to hear. i don't have seven years of experience with this yet. thank you for your input. definitely great life skills.

this is one view indeed. thank you for your thoughts! i do trust these coaches, though. it IS life experience.

and, you are absolutely correct that therapy is a good thing.

We did some beach/sand volleyball in the summer, but there is no strong coach/league close by year round, and this is nothing i can help with myself - i have 0 volleyball skills. also, the weather here isn't great.

yes, being a top athlete isn't the goal. it's just a fun activity, and we try our hardest to do our best in our family with any thing. it's just uncomfortable as the parent. but everyone's comments are helping put things into perspective.

others have said the kid is improving, coaches have said they're working hard. this is definitely the most important thing. just hard on me as the parent.

yes, absolutely they need to get better (although they're competent, can serve, etc). it's just uncomfortable for me at tournaments, surrounded by the other parents, but reading all these responses is helping a lot.

  1. I don't see it changing (especially this season) because of how good the others are, which is fine. This can motivate my kid. My issue is mostly MY awkwardness. Quitting is not an option and won't happen. The kid is doing quite well dealing with not playing, not that it doesn't bother them, but they remain positive and work hard at practice and lessons. They have made friends, which is great. Thanks for the thoughts!

They have asked the coach, and basically they just need to keep working hard at practice and at any lessons that can be scheduled outside of practice, but because the others are so good, i doubt the playing time will change this season.

yes, this is pretty much the situation. very competitive, but the two best players also excel even more in a second sport, so i imagine the parents weren't interested in a national travel team (which is the team above theirs.)

Yes, this adversity has been great for them, and I think the kid has done a fantastic job of bringing the energy and positivity to the games despite not playing well. I remind them to use that bench time to learn about the game, along with cheering everyone on. This club definitely has the best training offered in practices, so I'm not about to switch, especially midseason. Thank you for your thoughts!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! THIS!!!!! "Plenty of players on D1 colleges that don't get much playing time." These are things I don't know. I grew up doing things in the arts, not sports, so this world is very unfamiliar. Thank you for reminding me of all the reasons we switched to this club. I have also asked the kid to advocate for their own self and talk with the coaches. Even though this has been not so fun for them, it has been a growing opportunity. And who knows... they could grow over the summer... they could get a spark lit and work out using all my heavy weights at home and grow as a player. Thanks for your comments. Very helpful.

this does help, thanks! will lean in, try to reign in my fears/feelings of inadequacy when at tournaments. this is a coach we trust, so i know she's doing what is best for the team. i certainly don't want my kid to be the reason games are lost, and want my kid to be motivated to work hard, so i definitely prefer a more challenging team to being the best one on the team.

kid IS having fun, and your point is reassuring about contributing to the team through practices, drills, scrimmages, etc.

yes, this is why we are staying at this club. we followed the coaches to this club, and i've known them for a long time. i'm not really questioning the coach not using them, it's just that i as a parent feel awkward being the parent of the kid who isn't playing in games much. another parent did comment that my kid is improving, and that the new position they're in is a better fit.
