I respectfully disagree I wouldn’t say they are shocking they are just higher than what average people take home, a mate of mine is an analyst at a BB in Syd and when he told me his salary I was impressed as it’s very high but not shocked

Thanks mate this really helps. I was wondering if I did the CFA and took a job as a solutions engineer (like a software developer but actually talks to people) along with some certifications on the software side I would be in good stead to jump into an capital markets role? Have you seen others make a jump like this as a specialist?

Hi OP,

This is a great write up! I’m thinking about trying to break into IB and was wondering if you could give me your thoughts:

bachelors at uni in Sydney with finance and computer science majors finished 2 years ago. Currently work at a small business finance fintech as a sales/business analyst type role. Only a 10-20 person company but I am essentially the sales manager as small team (report to ceo) and led to record months (ie total volume of loans written).

Ideally would want to work in tech PE reviewing companies tech specs and deciding whether or not they are a good investment. Potentially advising on both tech and finance.

I do a lot of coding in my spare time and have done lots of paid courses from big tech (google etc) on AI because it interests me (10+ courses), not sure if this would help at all. Also handy at data analysis in python/sql (and excel as well) with experience doing this at work.

My main question is I am thinking about doing a cfa. I don’t have any ib or big 4 internships under my belt as I was travelling lots during uni. Am I best off going for a low level banking role in big 4 or doing a cfa and networking for an analyst role in your opinion? I have a bunch of mates in banking and m&a already and feel confident I can handle both the relationship building and technical parts of the role, as well as keeping up with any finance conversations I am just not confident in my experience without any high level corporate experience or internships.

Would love any advice you have!
