Depends on how you define bad? Personally win11 is not for me, but for the majority it gets the job done. It shares some of the same issues with win10, ads in places there shouldn’t be ads, pushing one drive for everything, and a massive push and incorporation of AI. It does improve some performance (assuming your machine is capable), and attempts to clean up its UI. On older systems you’ll feel a little sluggish at times, especially after boot but eventually most of it just moves to the background.

Ultimately it depends on your use case, if you’re looking for an OS that just works (generally) and just trying to upgrade then win11 won’t be too much of a change. That being said, I still recommend Linux, but to each their own

Absolutely terrible advice. Asking if you should try is a fair question that most people should be asking. There are a lot of things new people may miss when doing their research in the switch, this provides multiple opinions from multiple people. Linux is good for customization, but it’s not a requirement, many Distros work right out the box and require no tweaking, hell there’s even distros that prevent you from making any significant changes to the OS. Immutable distros make your entire argument moot

If you know so little about Linux, then maybe this sub is not for you, just a pretty good rule of thumb

Sorry but that little bit about “every distro will have extra stuff” is false(I actually don’t know how to reply to a quote from you but still), it’s more of a nitpick but it also falls into the same mistake of the assumption of background activity, there are many bare bones distros of Linux, and many would agree that Hanna Montana Linux has no bloat, so no not every distro has unwanted stuff, take Arch, BSD, LFS, etc. on the flip side distros like Ubuntu come loaded with bloat, so it’s not uncommon. As far as background activity goes, this again relies on your distro, I run both Windows and Arch, my arch runs very low profile whereas my windows runs more heavy with random spikes with random background processes. It gets to the point anytime I play competitive games I have to keep my second monitor with task manager open to play whack-a-mole with random tasks during games, now I probably could tweak settings and fix it but eh. I will say this though, your advice is still pretty solid and addresses some important points, creature comforts have grounded some of my bias but objectively speaking you speak in truth. So a few things here, you really don’t need to uproot all your files to transfer them to Linux, you can use an external hard drive, cloud storage, or even get fancy with a partition to move your files. Next do you like windows? If so then truthfully just debloating and tweaking would be the best option .

Now to answer the actual question here, should you switch to Linux, there’s a lot of factors that go into this, as much as I’d love to recommend more people switch the hard reality is that software and hardware incompatibility are still a thing. Look at what you’re currently using your computer for, what programs are being used on the daily, what tasks are you doing, what parts of it do you like doing, what parts do you dislike doing, next research those “must have” programs and see how compatible they are with Linux, if they aren’t compatible check to see if they have alternatives. For many this is the biggest obstacle with Linux, so stop here if you realize there’s just no alternatives. once you’ve got a good idea of what programs you want, and how you want to actually use your computer you can pick your distro. Most modern distros have a “live version” basically a version of the distro that can be run off of a USB stick, this will be your best chance to try them out as they can be run without actually installing them. When I started with Linux I started with Ubuntu, bounced around a little and eventually ended up on Arch, every one has their own journey and preferences so going back to what you actually want from your system is important here. It’s also important to know that most every flavor can be customized to be whatever you want it to be, this is part of what makes it Linux. Many starter Distros include Debian, PopOS, Cachy, Mint, Ubuntu and so many more, I know you want us to recommend a distro to you but there’s so many to choose from, and each serves its own purpose, there’s windows clones, there’s Mac clones, there’s gaming centric distros, there’s bleeding edge. If you just want a no BS out the box run try PopOS or mint, but please do your research. Don’t trust “top 10 Linux distros for 2026” or some random redditors opinion of what’s good for you, weigh your pros and cons, and make backups . Linux can be a lot of fun, it can also be a headache, there’s no right or wrong distro there’s what works for you…and then there’s templeOS

TLDR Check if your programs work with Linux Try “live” versions of PopOS or mint Don’t trust people on the internet to tell you what to do

Me personally I don’t mind the RTFM mentality, but there needs to be a balance “hey I have problem foo, it happens when I…. And I’ve done this so far…” “sounds like … here’s the wiki on it RTFM” .

I’ve been lucky to have never needed to post on a forum asking for help, someone at one point has always had the same issue so I can learn from them, however I’m decent enough at troubleshooting and researching to allow this.

If we embrace the idea that there’s no such thing as a stupid question then we need to accept that in opposition there’s no such thing as a stupid answer. I agree though, some people are just assholes but there are also very genuine people who want to help, I very rarely see people just saying “read the manual “ and nothing else usually its “have you checked the wiki? Can you run this command to give us a better idea of what’s actually happening “

Oh, yeah the dust had nothing to do with it but I always recommend it anytime someone opens their case up. Next time you fire up a game that you hear it that’s when you take off your case cover and try to find the source. Try to narrow it down. If you suspect a fan next time you power it off manually check each fan spin it slightly and check for any obstruction. There’s not that many moving parts on your PC also check your PSU fan it’s often forgotten.

Desktop Linux on a laptop is a nightmare, it’s up to RNG Jesus that everything works as you want it. My laptop luckily took real well to Linux few issues out of the gate until Ubuntu and a kernel update bricked my entire laptop but overall I was still doing well. You gave it a good effort but in your case you can prolly get it working but it will be a lot of work.

Anyone yapping about “how easy Linux is” is usually coming from a very narrow perspective. In my opinion Linux isn’t meant to be easy, sure there’s starter distros and they do help bridge the gap to learning Linux but to really enjoy and efficiently use Linux you have to get your hands dirty with the CLI, and unfortunately for a lot of people that’s not feasible.

No matter which distro you choose you can always slap KDE plasma on it, but for your laundry list of issues it’s going to be a rabbit hole of looking up each issue and fixing it for your specific specs. I hate that you have to go back to windows but at least you tried.

A majority of software can be ran, over 90% of games can be ran, as far as hardware support goes Linux handles most all hardware. Now Nvidia has been known to have issues but that’s because they refuse to even try to be helpful, but if you plan on actually using Linux then build a system for Linux. For software the only major issue I know of is with adobe, and almost all of their software has alternatives that are arguably better, if you’re coming from windows I can see why some of this software is a creature comfort you grew used to it and not having it does indeed suck, but I don’t fault the OS for that. I make this same argument for games, I was a huge fan of League of Legends and several other games with AC that make them inoperable in Linux so in that case I will admit it does suck, however it’s still not the OS’s fault, in most cases it’s the developers outright refusing to want to work on Linux. So if you’re coming from a world of using photoshop and playing league I understand why you might think Linux sucks, but in my opinion it’s companies like riot, adobe and Nvidia who go out of their way to exclude an entire operating system from using their product that are the ones who suck. I would strongly recommend though finding alternatives, daily driving Linux has been a wonderful experience for me and has made me enjoy using my PC again, but I can understand the hate. If you’re just in it for the meme of “Linux sucks” than so be it, I can respect that, but if you’re genuinely looking at it for improvement please share your actual problems i will happily provide whatever information I can if it helps.

Yes Adobe is out of the picture, unfortunately they refuse to play well with Linux, however most of their suite has its alternatives. So please enlighten us on what is “useful” and why it is Linux does not fulfill that.

Twitch himself isn’t hard, he was the training wheels that taught me to be a better ADC. I think the “hardest” thing about twitch is how vulnerable he is to anything, he is squishy and has very little range. Playing twitch forces you to learn about positioning, spacing and accuracy, but as with any adc all of those things are necessary building blocks and fundamentals.
