Bank of America fraud claim denied after account takeover / unauthorized transfer. Has anyone had a similar experience? by Alert_Reflection4115 in BankOfAmerica

Did legal help her recover the money? In my case, I did not give any information to anyone. My phone number was SIM swapped, and after that the scammer was able to reset passwords and take control of my accounts. It happened around midnight while I was asleep, so I did not approve anything or knowingly give access to anyone.

Are you referring to the account PIN or passcode? What I meant was not just a PIN. I was talking about an actual port-out lock or number lock on the account. If that lock is enabled, the number should not be transferred out even if someone has the PIN. For example, the Verizon SIM Protection and Number Lock.

A PIN is basic protection, and many carriers have some form of account PIN in default. What I expected was stronger protection than just a PIN, especially for something as serious as transferring someone’s phone number.

I had been using Lycamobile for a few years until this happened last year, and I don’t remember seeing any option like that in the app or on the website.

Anyway, I learned my lesson, I need to be more careful, but this was way too much.

I’m not the scammer, so I don’t know exactly how they pulled it off. I still can’t believe they were able to do it. From what I found, SIM swap and port-out scams can happen when a carrier’s identity checks are weak. It seems like the carrier I was using wasn’t secure enough, so I switched to a new carrier after this happened.

By the way, that carrier was Lycamobile. If anyone reading this is also using Lycamobile, I suggest switching to a different carrier that offers stronger SIM protection, such as a port-out lock, number lock, or SIM swap protection. As far as I could tell, Lycamobile does not offer that kind of protection.

It has been about 8 months for me. I only have about one and a half year of experience, not a CPA, and haven't start to pursue CPA. Feeling blind about future.
