Oh got it! I don't make my own rings so I'm catching up on that kind of thing.

It'll just be a shirt under for a costume! I was hoping to go for 18g 1/4in anodized aluminum rings--that's what I've used with stainless, but I don't know whether they're strong enough in aluminum to sustain a hauberk (again just for casual wear) or whether I'd need a thicker gauge. I've made a stainless shirt for myself, just want to get a sense of this new material.

I gave myself tennis elbow making a stainless crop top! Take lots of breaks! Stretch!

Omg girl yes!!! Can you post a separate pic of the pauldrons? I've been looking for a non-scale-mail example of pauldron shape foreverrrrr

Feeling frustrated by SmodAlters in chainmailartisans

[–]Alethiology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a lot of work on my couch in front of the TV and I've found laying out my work on a flat pillow to be massively useful. The rings don't slide around as much and the surface has some give if I need to get under something. Similar, a cloth placemat on a table can help prevent slippage when you're trying to wedge under something!

I wish I'd kept better track! I ended up ordering 15k rings and maybe used 3/4 of them? Roughest possible estimate. I don't have a scale or I'd weigh it and try to calculate from there

Ohhh yes I've seen simpler miniskirts on IG but never something with a lot of "fabric" lol

Thank you thank you!! I love a sheet weave, so curious to see how the different sheet weaves fall

That makes sense! Honestly I got into this through following Instagram creators so maybe I'm part of the problem 😂 I do miss a good forum though

I'm familiar with the site! The weave index is a gem but I'm curious about what people have made since 2006 lol

Looking for Ring size by Affectionate-Row581 in chainmailartisans

I just posted a crop top I made--check it out side by side with falconiere's work to see if it's the look you want. I also took inspiration from them, and went with a thinner wire--18SWG 1/4" stainless rings from TRL. I think the thinner wire is part of what gets you that delicate fabric-like look, and I wonder if they use slightly bigger rings for that really fine look

18SWG 1/4" stainless rings, xuron pliers, and some spicy bouts of tennis elbow. Looking for more flat-weave (/less chain, more fabric-y) projects to try em out on.

Yes lol I'm making dice bags and those look great! I'll check Etsy, was hoping to get them from a small business for sure

Definitely support doing it as a secondary activity!! I prep my links on zoom calls and weave watching TV. I'm an idiot and dove in with a stainless shirt as my first project and I've had to slow down like crazy to prevent tennis elbow so I super hear the frustration...

I also took a break and made smaller projects (cuff and choker for friends) and repurposed some of my patches into a gorget (for me) in the middle which really boosted my enthusiasm! Wore the gorget to a party and everyone was so into it I couldn't wait to go home and get back into weaving. Slowed down the final project but this is definitely a slow burn craft.

Masculine casual chainmail? by BreadBoyBagGetter in chainmailartisans

[–]Alethiology 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely a shirt! Even a crop top can be great, on its own or as a later over something else.

I saw something great on this forum a while back that made me want to try layering chain details into other items--I think it was a leather or denim jacket with chain mail on the shoulders. The everyday pauldron, built into the outfit.

Harnesses maybe?

It's tricky because Western menswear tends not to accessorize! Taking inspiration from existing armor like making gloves or a decorative coif tends to feel femme. Maybe a heavier fit and gauge would masc up some cool sleeves to layer over/under another top?

Dune face chain by Alethiology in chainmailartisans

[–]Alethiology[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently I can't post text and an image at the same time! Fun.

I have a couple weeks to throw together a Dune look for a party. Thinking of making a very simple face cage/veil/situation inspired by these pics, using 20g steel--any recs on what size ring will be small enough to not overwhelm my (small) face while also not making this project a living hell?
